Anybody know if they would sound good?? Has anybody done this? If so post some pictures

How much louder than stock is it? Would it compare to say a flowmaster 80 or a Dynomax in noise level or anything else you are familar with that you car compare it to.

And how is it holding up after everyday use- Does it appear to be any louder now than when you first installed it? I think I remember you installing it about 6 months ago.

 

It sounds great. I did have problems at first because I welded it in solid. And the new metal would ting n pop when hot. Started quenching the muffler with water after a drive to shock the metal & It finally stopped. But that was only cause of it being welded.


Though it really does sound good. No whiny V6 sound. I often will just drive around to listen to it. Has very good deep sound.

My stock system was annoying when you started rev'in it out.
around 3000 it gave it away as a V6.
No V6 clues from the sound now.

Also I get very good flow. This mod came about really as I fixed 100 holes in my stock system and noticed it didn't rev as fast in the higher band. That muffler solved my problems. Rev's free and easy.

That was really why it was done. So it would rev as fast as it did before but with a good leak free system and the stock fake dual muffler just couldn't do that anymore.

 

This is where I am looking to position a muffler. I want to get rid of the heavy rear Flowmaster dual setup and just route a single 2 1/2" turndown as diretly toward the back of the car as possible making the entire length of the exhaust path from motor to the rear of the car as short as possible to help flow. This wil also take heavy polar weight of the rear of the car for better corner transitioning agility.

I want a high flowing- long lasting- not any more noisy than a Flowmaster 80 exhaust insert or muffler that I can fit parallel to the driveshaft section of the exhaust and after the catalytic convertor.

 

With that much tail pipe it will probably be very quiet but still flow.

I have the same muffler on my wagon. and its similar to your pic. And it very mellow but deep. And of course flows like a dream.

 

What type of glasspack are you using?

lol, thats right, you posted a sound clip of it awhile back. That thing does sound nice. You got any other clips of with revving higher that 3k?

 

I broke my laptop making that first sound clip.
Need to get an ide to laptop thingy to fix it.
Battery got to low and buggered the HD.

 

yeah i have a cherry bomb on my v6 also and its sound really nice for a v6. im running it with out a cat or a mufler too. living in texas u just have to know where to go to get it passed. but the only thing ive noticed is when i fill up the first ride after that the gas fumes will build up in the cherry bomb and make a backfire sounds but other than that its great and cheap!!

 

I think I am looking to go with a Summit Racing 24"x 3 1/2" round "smooth muffler". They are actually made by Stainless Works for summit and are 100% stainless steel even internally. In other words, no glass pack to deteriorate over time making the exhaust noise level raise dramatically. I have ran glass packs on my Vette years back and the go out way too quick. I have now run spiral inserts in it and they have held up great over the years. I would just rather not mess with glasspacking on a solid weld-in setup like I intend in the picture and positioning I posted above.

 

Your not gonna blow out any glass packs on any V6 car. Let alone a stocker V8 car. I have used them on many many cars and never had that problem. I have one on my Buick wagon and it sounds the same 4 years later. Sounds great.


I do know what your talking about but only people I know blowing out glass packs. had killer HO motors. That or some bad restriction. Or they had them mounted right after the headers. Lots of heat and BP to gut them out. The system is much cooler at the end.


As, glass packing doesn't melt or burn easy. It would need to get contaminated with oil blow by or something to burn. Now if you have 100% clean packing that still burnt, It would of taken allot of BP / friction / heat to melt the packing. You would have to get them mufflers smoking hot to burn out fiberglass. And I would then up the pipe size to low BP and heat.

Course lots of guys like that. I know people who went with the thrush turboII mufflers as they would blow out after a few month of ripping on it.
They wanted the mufflers to gut.

No one here is gonna gut a glass pack in the stock location with a V6 under 300HP.

 

Though if you can afford more then a $20 muffler id go for it.

There was a very neat new designed muffler talked about not long ago. Id probably buy one of those if I was rich. Could build my own though............

You've got a very good point. I did runglass packs that burned up right after the headers on a car that spits flames out the headers when uncorked.

 

Yea it will burn n blow out on a car or install like that.

Ya need one of them supertrap mufflers. Real pricey race muffler that comes with removable disc to adjust BP and tune the cars sound.

Very nice. No parts to wear out or rust. Completely rebuild-able.

 

Thats an old picture. It now has 4" 3-bolt flanges into the same chrome 4"sidepipes but it now has metal spiral inserts that have lasted now for about 10+ years. The only experience I have ever had in life with glasspacks was on this car and they lasted 6 months. Thats why I was asking the questions I did about how they last on the V6.

 

Oh yea no problems. One on my wagon has last through 3 cars and years of use. Still sounds great. but none of them were comparable to Vette power or a system like that.

 

Where would you buy glasspacks? I have a 2.8 V6 and I'm interested in buying these, also does anyone know where I can get a soundclip of these on a 2.8 v6? Thanks.

Just about any parts store sells them.
I bought mine at a Grocery store if you can believe that.
It was cheaper then auto store and they had them all sitting out to look over n play with. I like to open up the box and make sure its ok.

 

heres mine, it sounds alright at idle and at half throttle but boy if i get on her it sounds horrible. Its like a fart cannon sad to say. but it sounded way better out the back of the car, the way i have it now it rattles everything in the car. I dont care too much about it, the v6's going soon and all that crap is with it

 

Oh yea. Ya gotta get the sound out from under the car to enjoy it right. Other wise it does just rattle your brains.

Had a 72 Charger like that once. Headers and dual glass packs ending right under the back seat floor. Everyone said it sounded good. I had no clue as I was deaf past 1/4 throttle.

ive got a 3.1 that has a red hot glass pack that dumps right before the rear axle with a 4th gen megaphone tailtip at the end and it makes it sound built and raspy although after you get above 3k it sounds super smooth and mellow like a ferrari on 6 cylinders

 

haah omg this thread is 2 years old, I did get a v8 but its not in a 3rdgen nor just the usual v8, ls1 baby haha
