Smog pump failing--should I just lose it?
My smog pump has been making noise for a few years now, and I can feel the pulley is loose, it wobbles... it still works, but I don't know how well..
I was at the junk yard the other day pulling a tensioner bracket for my car, when I noticed the car I was pulling it from (89 2.8 bird) had no smog pump... it just had a metal rod that bolted to the side of the engine somewhere, and a pulley was mounted on the end of it, a few supports kept it in place... would this be my best option, or would my car run like crap if I removed it?
I guess if I removed it I'd have to plug up all the hoses that the pump used to affect, but what else would I be looking at? What consequences would I face, other than maybe emissions? -- I'm not too concerned really, as I may even hollow out my cat.
Thanks

should I just go back to the junk yard and snag that pulley setup, then plug the hoses, or is there more to it than that? I assume no electrical or sensors, right?

I have no idea, its just that the pulley is dying on it.. or it may be the bearings or whatnot..
just figure instead of PAYING to have a new one installed, I may as well just get rid of that POS

I'd just leave it, but it's getting REALLY noisy... I have a feeling it will seize up sometime in the near future... taking my belt with it. I'm basically wondering if I should replace the pump, or get the smog deletion setup from a junkyard...

Brand new they are probably pretty easy on using up power.
smog pump is like a roots blower. cammed round wheel in a round aluminum housing. With 3-4 fins that drag and scrap on the walls to push air around. I had one apart once and it basically looked like that. Steel fin dragged across aluminum and no wonder it seized up like a rock. Had to beat it apart, there was no way or chance of making it work again. It seized.
But brand new I bet the tips and surfaces are coated with something. Probably like a roots blower. Teflon tips on the screws.
Ya only "need" one of your in a smog check zone.
I had one but took it off. My 86 has the easier Vbelts and the 86 auto trans cars had no smog pump, so a shorter belt was simple to find and install.

When mine seemed to have fallen off the car I had to make a new alt bracket to keep the next size belt tight. I also had to route it slightly different.
The vac hose I plugged with a screw.
The hole in the manifold I found some brass fitting, but it kept backing out on me. I ended up using some type of muffler repair putty, and jamming all that shiznit in, and heating it with a propane bottle to make it stick.
Wires I just tye wrapped up to something.
Mine is still laying around somewhere, at some point I would like to take it appart and see what it is/looks like. More projects then time, and its last on my list.

I may have to go snag that off that car... I may have to replace the pulley though, as its been in the rain so long.
