89 2.8L probs... Code 34?
89 2.8L probs... Code 34?
Ok, this is drving me crappin nuts. My poor little 2.8 has been on the edge of mechanical bad luck since I've had it... but I'm hangin in there. :-)
Ok, I was getting a code 23 and 34 yesterday. I don't get the 23 anymore.
Symptoms -
From a cold start, runs ok. Runs like normal. Then as it starts rising to operating temp, it starts having "hiccups" and losing the ability to throttle past about 3K rpms. When I give it more than 1/2 throttle it starts sputtering, backfiring, oh and my favorite the shooting of smoke and/or a flame from the throttle body. The Tach goes crazy jumping all around.
Oh yeah, and there is the problem that it likes to die at idle most of the time. So I can't let the rpms drop below 1K.
I did replace my MAF sensor... which actually seemed to make it run worse... In addition to a new set of plugs and wires.
It's drivin me nuts. I just wanna cruise in my Cammy damn it! Thoughts, suggestions, need more info, I'm watchin.
Hey! Add a code 42 to that now! ...wtf?...

When was the last time you set the timing? The reason i ask is because you are saying that you are getting firings out the intake and because of the codes.
Code 23: IAT Sensor Malfunction.
Code 34: MAF Sensor Malfunction
Code 42: EST Malfunction
Firing out the intake is your #1 Problem. This needs to be taken care of <b>FIRST</b>. For whatever reason, you have ignition when an intake valve is open, either because you have a timing chain that has jumped a tooth, or a burnt intake or just a bad Ignition problem. This is most probable since you have an EST code.
Is the vehicle hard to start? Do you have to crank it for a while?
When you have pressure build up like that in the intake and ducting, the MAF has a sudden change and that's my guess as to where you're getting the code 34 from. It also causes a sudden jump in temperature and that changes the IAT and that's where the code 23 was coming from.
I would venture to guess that the intake fire has killed your new MAF too. They tend not to like fire very much.
Remember, give us as much info as possible about the work that you have previously performed on the car, that way we know where things are at right now.
Hope this gives you something to work with man, good luck.
