What functions controlled by Inlet Air Temprature Sensor?

What functions controlled by Inlet Air Temprature Sensor?
Hi All
I'm probably going to change my Inlet Air Temprature Sensor.
It possibly got wet during the radiator breakage other week.
Yet what functions does this sensor control and when is it activated?
Cold Operation (engine temp & outside air temp)
Warm/Normal driving (engine temp & outside air temp)
or Warm engine but cold outside air temp

Car: 87 Red/Blk Bird loaded 3.4L & 700R4
Transmission: Th700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.73
Can't really tell you what is controlls, but when mine got ripped off by the armadillo (old CAI) the car coded and ran horrible...stumbling. I got the conical filter back with the ATS and plugged it all back in. Car did not code, but ran rough till I replaced the sensor. I had been driving so the engine was warm and the air was warm...
So I would say it works with the other sensors to help control idle and such. Idle was most noticibly effected!
