sounds like a VATS issue to me. I know that the thing in the key or the thing in the ignition has a habit of going bad and this happens, but I don't remember if it's the key's fault or the ignition's fault.

i know the s-10s are extremely common for this problem. it is the ignition, not the key. this may not be your case, but i would think thats where your problem lies is in the cylinder/module for the VATS. scan it for codes, see what you come up with. it SHOULD throw a code for that. also look at the key, see if the chip is really worn or damaged at all.

I have the exact same car (1991 Firebird 3.1/A4) and my car will occasionally not start for the same reason. It is DEFINATELY the VATs. In my case, I'm almost certain it's the key, because the pellet is very visibly worn down.

But, anyway, there you go. It's either the pellet on the key, or if it looks pretty ok, the contacts inside the lock cylinder are probably worn.

Could definately be. The "fingers" in the lock are pretty expensive; may as well just pop the pellet from the key, solder it inside your steering column (bypass VATS completely), and spend $150 on a good starter kill alarm.

Do you have an alarm system??? if it is improperly connected or defective it will cause this issue on many occassions. I was about to spend many dollars on fixing the problem, because i didnt want to bypass it, and luckily decided to check it out myself before bringing it in the following week and discovered that there a security system in the car that had been disconnected from the lights, horn, etc... and was wired to the ignition. Disconnected it, reconnected all the wires to stock and the problem has not happened since, unless my car stalls it happens, but thats once in a blue moon.

sounds like VATS. go to eckler's camaro website and buy the vats delete module. Youll need to know which code your keys are tho , have to take it to a dealership and ask. Should be 1 - 15. Dont remember how much they are but it isnt to bad of a price
