Im getting a asp underdrive crank pully. What lenght does the belt have to be (i have a/c and smog pump)? It would be really good if some had the part# for a goodyear gatorback belt that will fit my 3.1 with the underdrive crank pulley. Others have said the old trial & error way is the way to go.

jay,
i dunno about the asp pulley set, but i had to go with the trial and error method in the auto hobby shop on base. if it comes with a alternator pulley, DO NOT i repeat do not put it on the pulley, i had to get a new alternator and mounting bracket and belt for it. somehow it threw the alternator out of ballance and wore out a groove in the "fan" on the alternator that caused the bearrings or what ever reduces friction in the alternator to go bad, that caused the shaft to bend, and all the vibration from all of that stuff, caused the mounting bracket to crack and break on me. it was prety costly to fix( new alternator 135$ new battery 65$ new brackets $119 and $49{discontinued now})

i just used the rope method, but i had deleted the smog pump on mine so there wasnt a number available. i think i remember seeing a part number on their website for the belt you need like dale mentioned. otherwise, get some rope man.

Sounds like you installed it incorrectly. If you don't get that nut tight enough it will get lose and wobble. This in turn will cause the same problem you had. It had nothing to do with the pulley.

I have been running both for all most 4 years, and I drive 170 - 280 miles a day with no problems.

Just beacuse you have a problem with a product doesn't mean it was due to the product. When we are doing the work our selves we all ways have to ask was problem caused by some thing we did or didn't do?

not only did i do it as the instructions said, i used a impact wrench, and then a breaker bar to ensure it was tight. according to the directions, i did it right. i think that there was already a crack in the mounting bracket that i didn't know about at the time. when it broke, i saw where it was cracked for a while, then the new clean break

dude, you drive more than i did last year and i put 30,000 on the car in 8 months. (went from va-pa-ill-va-ill-pa-va-fl-va-fl-pa-fl)
at one point i thought i was gonna drive the wheels right off the car. right after i got back to florida for the last time, i went half way around the world to fight a war for 6 months.(second time over there)

Yeah a cracked braket can cause some problems!! Happened to me 2 time. first was the alt. second was the A/C rear bracket.

I drive this far for work. Depending on the site I go to. Modesto, ca to Pleasanton, San Jose, Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Santa Rosa, and Roseville. Then there are days i have to pick up parts, go to 1 or more sites. The miles rack up fast!!! I'm currently @ 340,000 miles. Baught the car with 123,000 miles 4 and half years ago.

Twice I thought I did drive the wheels off. With driving this far I have had some pretty strang brake downs. A broken calipar guide pin ,I thought it was a draging brake. So I waited sat. to fix. This happened on a thursday fortunetly. I cracked my cltuch fork, was ran off the road and hit a chunck of cement that smashed my oil pan. Due to our wounderfully smoth in NorCal. I have had verious parts come lose and fall out. Prompting me to pull over and walk back about 1/4 mile to pick up the part and put it back on the side of the road. Like a spark plug.

If you go back to fire keep your head down!!

91greenbird ,

I took the gates part# posted above to the parts store and let them find an equlivant belt. If you need the Gates parts # for the crank only, with or with out air conditioning, or with the alt. pulley ASP as an application chart on there sites that list of the #'s plus the list for application will be shipped with the pulley's.

Kinda nice of them to send it. most other manufacture's leave you to figure it out on your own.
