rear end noises
I didnt know exactly know where to post this question so I will try it here. I dont know where its coming from but there are some "klunks" coming from the rear end of my car. I hear them when i back out of my drive way slowly, when i hit small bumps, and the loudest "klunk" happens about 2 min. or so after i shut my car off. Has anyone ever had this happen or have heard of this? Thanks for any help.

sounds like the rear end has too much play or your idle is too high at first, but i am not sure about the clunk after the car is out of gear and in park and turned off. might be a good idea to check the clearances in the rear end and think about replacing the gears. does the car jump right after putting it in drive or reverse along with makeing the noise? check driveshaft play, shoud be less than 1/8 of a turn while in park with the motor off.

check the end links of your rear sway bar, should be visible by looking in front of the rear tires, the sit just a little bit back. Mine were rusted, one was even rusted out at the botton so every time i went over a bump it was a knocking/popping noise from the end link hitting the sway bar.
Actually, totally ignored that last part, have not idea what that would be

I'm gonna change my muffler tomorrow and i will check everything to make sure of clearence. About putting it in gear, I have not had any problems when i put the car in drive or reverse. The tranny and gears seem to be fine, but I will get it checked out if everything else is fine in the rear end. If anyone else knows please help. Thanks.

I think I might know what it is but I dont want to go changing things that arnt bad. Could it be the rear shocks. When i jacked up my car i heard the noise and it echoed a bit. It cam from the direction of the shocks but I am not sure if this is it. Could someone with more knowledge on the subject than me tell me if this could be the problem.

i could be wrong but i think it could be a combo of both. I did not have the popping noise in my car until i replaced the shocks, and then it happened all the time until i replaced the end links, however it could just be your shocks, but replacing your end links couldnt hurt while your at it since our rides are so old.
