speed sensor

i have an 88 2.8 rs.... and, just confused weather the speed sensor will be behind the instrument panel, or down on the trans?
i get a code for the sensor and my speedometer does ok till about 65, anything after that it jumps anywhere from10 to 15 mph's.... also,i was just reading the"doesn't make sense" post a few lines down, i gotta say, i love the passion we hold for these v6 cars of ours.... i learned alot by reading these posts for probably 6 to 8 months before i would think about responding.. now the mods i have done have turned out pretty good,"i think so anyway". thanks....

haynes manual says transmission.
yea we love theese cars, and some of us won't take S**t from the V-8 guys. welcome aboard man.
may be your cable or speedo. mine did that and then quit working. i sent it to the shop to have the cable replaced, and they told and showed me that both were shot. they had to get the speedo from the junk yard, and the cable was like 15$ from advance.

On the camaro, you have a cable driven speedo. the VSS is on the back of the tach, so you'll have to pull the insturment cluster to get to it.

not if you don't have a tach. according to the haynes manual, and no brain fart this time, it is located on the speedo for 84 and older and tranny for 85 and newer

I think the firebirds got digital speedos before the camaros, but I do know that 88 camaros have it behind the speedo, I just had my dash out 2 weeks ago when I did the Heater Core.

Here's the picture of the back of my cluster. The bright yellow thing is the VSS module and it's bolted to the back of where the tach is. You can see the wiring that goes over to the speedo portion. It uses an optical pickup to get a signal that reflects off a 2-pole peice of polished metal that is driven directly by the cable.

HAYNES is wrong again. i pulled my guage cluster around feb, and mine didn't have it on there. it was on the tranny, so when i saw it in haynes, i assumed(yes make a *** out of U and ME) that they were actuall correct on something. guess i was wrong on that one. sorry guys, told you what book said, but you obviously proved book wrong.

You needn't EXACTLY DO THAT.
Be prepared to replace cable.
Probably will be doing that.
And when ya replace the cable, you'll need pull cluster.
And seriously doubt your sensor is bad.
USUALLY it's the feeding SIGNAL (as in bad speedo reading caused by flaky cable cause it aged & "dead") to the sensor. Sensor just reads that information and if wrong well it'll send a code.
Go to deler ask for illsutreade parts print out of yoru speedo area and take home the parts list print out, too. Buy the part & give the guy a soda for his help & those take home print outs.
My cable cost me $20 from GM & it solved lots of problems. Like tranny convertor lock up for one.
