Another leak update...

I put on a used EGR valve on my 3.1 today. Since I can't find anyone that sells the gasket between the EGR and the pipe it mounts to, I used some black RTV. Seemed to run a little better, but IM still am going to get some pipes put on going to the cat. I also noticed that after cranking the car for 30 seconds or less, the silver pipe that comes from the EGR pipe and goes into the throttle body got HOT! Is it supposed to get that hot for no more than the car ran? And where is a good cheap place to get some fuel injectors? I might take the plenum off and tighten the bolts that connect the intake down and I want to put some injectors in while I'n in there. Might as well while I'm checking for loose bolts.

id go to the wreckers and get a set of injectors off a 3.1 and just have them cleaned.

i bought new injectors and it was over 400$

i should have just gotten used ones from the wrecker and had them cleaned. it only costs 100$ to clean and the wreckers are cheap

Write this down: FelPro MS 93020 Intake Gasket Kit.

The kit includes all of the gaskets you need to replace when you remove the intake manifold, and your EGR gasket. Also, you will want to write down FelPro 800-9220 Fuel Injector Seal Kit. This kit includes 16 fuel injector o-rings. That's right, you get four spares in case you lose a couple.

No, the EGR transfer pipe is NOT supposed to get hot when you have the engine running for less than a couple of minutes at IDLE. The EGR, IIRC (not sure about the later 3.1 system, though), is only supposed to open above about 40 MPH. If the pipe gets hot, then you have a solenoid sticking open , and the ony way to fix this is either go and clean all of the pintles or replace the valve unit (which is NOT cheap by any means).

:edit: The MS 93020 only covers 60* engines up to the 1989 model year, and does not contain the EGR valve gasket for the 3.1. However, you MIGHT be able to get away with using the ULTRA COPPER RTV silicone gasket maker. Any other color may fail due to the high temperatures of the exhaust gases. The ultra copper stuff is good to 700* F, which is not as much lower than the actual temperature of the exhaust stream than are the red, blue, and black RTV formulations.

Forgot to mention, If you are going to spend $100 on injector cleaning and how ever much for the spare set of injectors, why don't you just spend $200 for a set of injectors that has a LIFETIME WARRANTY? Linder Technical Services (www.lindertech.com) happens to sell sets of Bosch fuel injectors that are guaranteed for a lifetime and will be replaced free of charge if any ever fail. They also do the injector cleaning, along with Cruizin Performance (www.cruizinperformance.com).

Well...since I got another used EGR valve to play with, I might do like I did some corroded spark plug wires I have on my riding mower. They were that brown corrosion type so I just sandblasted them. They turned out really nice and shiny and did much better on gas after I blasted the flywheel and magnet. So I'm going to blast the contacts of the EGR that can be seen from the bottom that meets the 3 pintles. I might also blast the 3 pintles to get them nice and clean then soak them with Brake Kleen to get rid of any residual sand. I'll let ya know how it goes and thanks for the advice.

You still need the EGR gasket part number? If so, it's probably FelPro 70397, but the site doesn't have pic so I can't tell for sure. Other part numbers are GP Sorenson 7792618 (no, I don't recommend this one-don't really like their parts all that much), and Niehoff FE328 or FE331. All part numbers are from Advance Auto, but all except the Niehoff can be found at AutoZone also.

:edit: BTW, the cheapest valve I could find was $170...

$170!!!!........man when I was a kid, for that much I could get an EGR valve, some nice top-of-the-line Kraco speakers and still have plenty of money for a movie and something to eat.Times are a changin'.LOL.

Thanks for the Felpro number.I have used thier stuff before and have'nt had a complaint yet.

Yeah, the digital (and verrrrrrrrry expensive) era is upon us. Almost makes me wonder if I'll ever see gas prices below $2 a gallon at every service station (not just the native reservations) in NY...

I only use FelPro. Also, if you need to do head gaskets, their Blue Stripe series has part number HS8699PT2. Just did mine, no leaks!

Same here. Except I need a job period...
