Engine newbie tuneup questions...

Okay guys, I just replaced the hard brake lines on my 88 and now I'm looking into tuning her up so she runs nice and smooth. The problem is when it comes to engines I'm a newbie. If it needs more than plugs, wires, or a PCV valve, I'm as green as kermit.

So I read Tom's tuneup and it mentions to replace the cap and rotor. I have three questions about that:

1) Do you guys have a recommended cap/rotor combo? Since it's only a V6, obviously high performance isn't in my vocabulary, but I do want something that will last a long time and run well. I just purchased an 8.8 wire set and replaced the plugs, so I'm looking for advice on what kind of cap/rotor to get.

2) Are there any step-by-step guides on this forum (or the web in general) on how to replace them?

3) Do I need to change the ignition too? If so, any recommendations on that too?

The last question I have is about timing...do you know of a step-by-step guide on the web for that as well?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated..

Thanks,
John

Get a cap and rotor set that is made of brass. It will last longer, and conduct better then the aluminum ones. Cost wise is just a few bucks more.

As for replacing, its VERY simple, all you need is a phillips screw driver, or some rig-up with a 7/32 socket. Pick up the haynes or chiltons manual when you buy the parts, it should explain it.

Move the wires over one at a time is your best way not to confuse where they go.

No need to upgrade the ignition unless you really really want to.

Timing will be explained in the haynes/chiltons manual as well.
