Woot, im on the right track, working on car today!

Finally got some time and respectable weather to work on the car today. As family was gone so I could put a fuel filter in today.

Go to pull it in, car wont start
Grab the new cheapie ICM I bought yesterday, put it in. Fires right up, jumping tach is fixed.

Pull in garage, jack her up, pull fuel filter, install new one bought weeks ago
Fires up, MUCH better, but still sputtering. Grab old fuel filter, pour gas out that is black with black chunks.

Tip given to me, install timing light on every plug wire to see if it is or isnt getting current. same plugs that were black were only sometimes flashing. So I'm off for new wires n new plugs.

So, lets see, to fix whatever happend I have..
New MAP
new ICM
new IAC
new O2 sensor
new coil
adjusted tps
1 new cap/rotor set
3 sets of plugs
1 set of plug wires
2 tanks of 93 oct gas
fuel filter
learned to data log
3 bottles of 90% alchoal
2 5 gallon fuel jugs
1 2 gallon fuel jug
back down to 1.5 stock rockers

while doing all that, I installed new double heim lca's, and pulled the foam off the back of my carpet, also cleaning my carpet(badly needed). All this in close to 7 weeks

Hopefully this fixes it all. And she will run like a bat getting chased by another bat from hell

thats about what ive been doing to my car . . . only my iac just needed to be cleaned, and either my fpr is dying/leaking or some of my injectors are going, so im gonna pick up a low mileage fuel rail of a j-yard car and swap that over. that and the fact that i cant even get 93 gas here, so its just been a tank of 87.

nocturnal, yes. Cleans the fuel system, and drys any water that is in the system out.

Car runs SOOOOOO much better, but still has a sputter way up high. Hoping that its just blowing carbon build up out of it and re-adjusting the ecm.

Going to do some logging tommorow for any of you that read that stuff.

Friend came over, if I do an engine swap for him, I get a vortec 305 SWEET.

naft, what was yours doing, i dont recal reading the thread?

BTW, car is back to running like crap. I am going to drop the tank and inspect the inside. I think I have debris in the tank pluging up the stainer and/or pump.

Actually its 91% at walmart

but most places including walmart sell a 70% something and a red 90+

I got a bottle of 91% around all the time.
cheap and handy for all kinds of stuff. Great for cleaning gunk.

------------

Dale were ya able to id the crap in the fuel filter? Sure more isn't still in there? How did that stuff get past the in tank pump filter and screen??? I wouldn't do much till you figure that one out.

Id drain your tanka few more time but use the fuel line. just keep pouring back in what comes out but use a paint filter. Id do something more though. big chuncks of stuff that got past the fine mesh filter sock, could do it again.

70% is "normal" rubbing alchohol. My dad used to use 90% for minor degrease jobs. Stuff actually works pretty well. He would buy it from the local Walgreens drug store. Chick at the register thought he was out of his mind for buying five bottles of alchohol and a couple of cheap toothbrushes.

I got the answer to that!!!....well, not for Dale's car and not really for a 3rd gen.....but for my daily driver, a 1989 Pontiac 6000, the fuel filter was LOADED with junk.....I thought it was weird till I changed the fuel pump and found a pretty large hole in the fuel strainer staring at me

didnt actually make a thread i dont think, but I was having some pretty serious issues(bad idle, missing, backfiring, etc), but those went away after i did pretty much everything that you've done so far, but i was still having some moderate to heavy missing and stumbling under load. then my car just stopped starting though, so it went away . turned out to be the pickup coil in my dizzy, and since i've had it back up i havent had any problems. (except a clicking injector or two, but that hasnt caused any driveability issues).

Wow, so many topics.

Is it 91%? Anyway, yes, red bottle is high stuff, blue is low stuff. I pour one small bottle per tank. Then drive like you normally do.

I have no clue what was in the filter. And yes, I'm confused as to how it got past the main filter, thru the pump, and to the 2nd filter. And even more into my injectors!!!!

This the reason to pull the tank. I just dont have time right now for that major of a project. Tank is brand spankin full of gas right now too Going to slowly spihon it into the gp.

I hear ya Dale... I think a new tank is like $150, though - but I understand the 4th gen tanks will go right up, hold an extra gallon, and are plastic

...here's the weird part. I had a FRAM fuel filter in my car. When I removed it, and kinda let the thing drain in the flow direction, the gunk in the filter came out with it.....and it also came out the other way....so it seemed like the filter was just there doing nothing????

I'm not to sure what was in my filter, but the gas coming out also looked all blackish. Smelled kinda funky too.....bad gas maybe? oh, but my car ran good.

Just going to clean out the one I have. Would love to slap in a 4th gen just for the cupped fuel pump. $$ says otherwise.

karr, yea mine was black when I pulled it out. Smelled like gas though... imagine that?

off to deliver one of my trannys

New tanks are acctualy around $200 - $350 depending on ware you get one.

Could the junk that came out the flow side of the filter be oarts of f'd up filter?

Fram makes crappy filters. They clog and fall a part way to early and easily.
