Shift **** problem

Got a problem, I start my car, the button on the shifter will not push in to put the car into gear. I have a 1990 Firebird, 3.1, stock tranny. The **** itself is a little loose, it turns maybe a quarter inch. The car runs pretty strong, and I have not noticed any tranny problems while driving in normal traffic.

Any help is very much appreciated.

if you can pull the **** off, take it off and check the spring that holds the button. Ive had experiences (non-third gen) where the spring pops out or just gets stuck/broken.

The problem was the shift linkage cable.
