One more question about the swap!

Ok, I was looking at the 3.4 engine and forgot to check this. It's gonna a be in my posession as soon as I find a way to get it home lol

But this is a question regarding the balancer/harmonic balancer. I read through the posts and tech articles and you have to use the 3.4 harmonic balancer aka the vibration damper right? The thing the serpentne belt pulley bolts to right? But the 3.4s did not have to be timed so they had no timing marks.

So I know you need to swap the timing cover from the 2.8 over to the 3.4 because of the timing marks. But what about the damper/balancer? The 2.8 damper/balancer has a notch in it so you can time the engine with the marks on the cover right? But does the 3.4 balancer/damper have that mark as well? If there are no marks on the balaner/damper what do you do?

So long question short, when I reuse the 3.4 balancer/damper, will it have the notch/mark in it to set the timing? Thank you!

i dont know if the 3.4 balancer has the timming marks, but if it dosent,u can carfully transfer the marks from the 2.8/3.1 balanver to the 3.4 balancer with a scribe, then paint the scribe line with paint and a tiny model brush.if the 3.4 does have the timming mark on the balancer also check to make sure its in the right location

You can also swap the narmonic balacer from the 2.8 over, is it's in good shape.

Thanks for the reply guys. I was just thinking of that. Line up the balancers and then mark the 3.4 balancer. Maybe I can make a little cut/slit in it later on to make it easy to time .

But can you use the harmonic balancer from the 2.8? (mine is a 1989 made in October) I thought you need to use the balancer for the 3.4 since the 3.4 is internally balanced or something like that? Use the flywheel and damper from the 3.4 right? If you can use the 2.8 balancer mine is in pretty good shape. Is mine reuseable? Thanks again!

no you wont be able to reuse your 2.8 balancer. but the 3.4 does have the timing marks on it so youre good there. also, depending on the mileage of the engine, when you take the balancer off, you might wanna have it sleeved. they like to leak and take out the crank seals as they get older. a few of us have had that problem w/ them, and mine only had about 60k on it.
