Automatic Tranmission Shifter

Hey guys what in high heaven is an AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTER?
I stumbled on a website and it was very interesting, is an automatic transmission shifter just for fun, I mean you can't actually shift like a stick shift trans with this right? What is it used for? This was the description
"Hurst Quarter Stick Automatic Shifter Kit for positive gear change control for street & racing transmissions. Designed for 2-, 3-, and 4- speed valve bodies in forward and reverse shift patterns. Detent activation by chrome-plated trigger. NHRA-accepted spring-loaded reverse lockout that can be worked with one hand"

That kit most likely reporgrams the valve body (reprograms, as in puts new spacers with different holes so as to modify the normal fluid flow)

If I remember right, that one is to make your auto tranny - when in Manual gear range 1 (Thats the one on your auto shifter), it STAYS in 1 no matter what, until you hit the detent, which moves it to 2. Then it STAYS in 2 no matter what, until you detent again into D, (3rd), and so on.

actually the shifter doesn't include the kits to convert the trans to manual control, you need a transgo kit, or like a manual vavle body to have that. The shifter is just a replacement for the console one that comes in the car, and buying one like that is pointess unless you have the trans converted to at least partial manual control because a lot of them make you ratchet the gear change a few times just to get into the drive position (since its the 3rd posistion in the trans gear selector, you'd have to yank the shifter back 3 times to put it in gear). With manual control, this shifter becomes useful (for racing at least) because you can just put the trans in first gear, then when its time to shift, you don't have the worry about shifting into the wrong gear, just bang it once and its in the next gear, don't have to think about it or anything, and you can do that through all the gears

Transgo 700--2&3 shift kit is one way to go, makes use of the shifter. I'll be finding out soon, how well it works.

The shifter is simply the handle that you use to move the gears. There are aftermarket shifters avaliable to ratchet the shifts and ones to pull a different lever for each shift, as well as ones that work mainly like the stocker.

Race autos use a manual valve body, and they hold the gear until manually shifted. The stock shifter is hard to pop through the hears at the forces these cars are pulling.

Hope this helps!

i put one of those kits in my 69 c20, and it basicaly turned it into a manual without a clutch, if i move from 1st to third it does exaclty that and drives fine, but it will not shift down without me moving the shifter, if im in third and stop then try to start again the truck will stall. it kinda fun though
