sudden power increase

hi well it all happened the day i first got my firebird 1987 2.8 car from my dad it had never been used in about 5 years or more and i simply thought my car had no power because it would normally take a really long while to get to 45 miles per hour then about a month or so i went to my dads birthday party then next thing you know my car has some crazy power like i could get to 45 miles an hour in 5 sec i was thinking to my self what had happened to get such a high power increase but i still dont kno maybe my dad did something or maybe something else happened if you guys can explain to me wat happened tell me plz thank u
