valve cover question............

valve cover question............

Ok, the replacement gaskets I have are the felpro cork repalcement things, just like the originals. But when I removed the originals, they were the HARDEST things to remove. Almost as annoying as the plug in the 3.4 cylinder head lol If I ever have to remove them again....wow lol

Soooo...my questions are these...

1. Is there another type of gasket that comes off easier and seals good? Perhaps like the oil pan gasket? Any suggested brands? I know Hondas and I think some Toyotas use these type of rubber valve cover gaskets.

2. Should I just use RTV sealer instead of a gasket? Does it work better and come off easier?

This is one of 2 reasons I switched to fiero covers.

If you put a thin thin layer of silicone on both sides it should be easier to remove and also seal better.

I scrapedoff the old gasket and used the cork ones, like you. Whan I re-assembled the engine, I sprayed some adhesive to the covers and one side of the gasket. Then coated the head side of the gasket with oil. Since then the covers come off nice, and the gaskets stick to the covers nicely and can be re-used.
BTW, did the gaskets stick to the heads or covers?

Thanks for the reply guys! I'm gonna try that. I'll apply some RTV to both sides of the gasket so it'll seal good....and hopefully I won't have to remove them anytime soon though.

Dale, I can see why you went with the fiero covers.....they are sweeeeeet lol Sadly, very hard to fid fieros in Hawaii's junkyards.

I would have LOVED for them to have stuck to the heads. They sstuck to the covers and it was pretty difficult to scrape them off with a screwdriver expecially in the groved area.....brings back baaaaaaaad memories haha

I like the gaskets to stick to the parts that are easy to remove. Just don't want chunks of gasket in a place you can't clean it out easily.
