no overdrive
I have an '86 Camaro with the 2.8, it is all original with 250k miles on it. I use this as a daily driver, to and from work and around town. When i got this poor thing the linkage was held on by a wire, and it had a hard time shifting, and I could not manually shift into 2 or 1 gear. After I fixed the linkage it drives like a dream with only one problem. If i put it into Overdrive it acts as if it is in neutral. I am not a motor head yet, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out on trying to fix this without replacing the transition.

Sounds like it had a problem with the transmission at one point and someone replaced the torque converter with a non-locking unit. Might be a broken pump in the transmission though. I'm not to familiar with the transmissions internal workings. My moms S10 truck (same tranny) had the same problem but it kept running fine dispite the non-existing OD. I'd be curious to find out what it is as well, if someone could post something useful.

Do you have two neutrals or does the shifter and linkage need to be adjusted?

I'm not sure you can get your overdrive back without getting into the transmission... at 250k miles it's okay to replace the transmission anyway!
If you're on a tight budget then look for a 700R4 or 4L60 (not the "E" model) from 1990 through 1993 Camaro or Firebird V6 (3.1 or 3.4 engine) because they have the most factory updates for that series of transmission. My last V6 automatic was from a 91 with a 3.1 and I sold it at 248k still shifting and driving fine. A guy put it in his S-10...
