few questions (been there done that )
Ok guys here's the story back in 96 i bought a 86 firebird with a 2.8 that had a rod knock. so what i did was pulled the motor. stripped the motor down to the block sent it out had it bored .40 over ordered a rebuild kit from PAW. sent the heads out to be cleaned and rebuilt . put it back together. the parts i can remember or atleast a discription of the parts might give you a good idea of what it had. the intake was an Edelbrok 2 peice intake the carb switched from FI was a 390 holly the cam at the time there was 3 for that motor one close to stock a mild one and a strip one i went with the mild . i bought a high flow high volume oil pump i thought they were 1.5 roller tip rockers but i guess there 1.52 from reading these boards. headman headers flowmaster muffler on I think it was a 2 1/2 inch exhaust. and msd 6al ignition the rings were tri metal and the pistons were if i'm not mistaken flat top. had to get a fuel pressure regulator because of the pump in the tank had to lower the fuel pressure if i remember correctly. put it all together also did the normal chrome valve covers and timing chain cover and double roller timing chain. but anyways put it all together and was sadly disapointed in the performance. also did the shift kit with the B&M shifter. Now here I am I bought a few months ago a 90 camaro rs with a 305 was happy it was a v8 but a guy walked up to the door and offered me a good amount for it 800 more than i had into it and it was gone. well i have been looking for another one and it's a 91 camaro with the 3.1 I already know it isn't enough hp for me but doing a v8 swap isn't in the cards because of emissions so dong a 3.1 is the next logical solution. but like i said been there done that. the main thing i remember about the old 2.8 was it made alot of exhaust noise and went no where. was it faster than a stock 2.8 yea it was but was it 5.0 faster no i would still get beat by 5.0 mustangs. I know the 2.8 and the 3.1 are alot alike so do i do this again?
any good suggestion?

I love the 660s.
If you'e into doing a little more work than you did last time, pick up a 3.4 from a mid '90s F-body. Most people are quite happy with the results even in stock form.
Now for some real upgrades you can swap on a set of FWD 3400 heads and intake, (3400 pistons also) with custom or modified headers, and net around 200 HP in what I refer to as "stock form", no real internal upgrades, just stock form.
Port and upgrade the cam, maybe some oiling system work, etc. Could get you some very decent gains, in a lighter package to boot.
Please for the love of god, keep it injected, this is the next millenium, and EFI is so much better than carbs, in just about every aspect.

I agree with you on the keeping it FI after i was all said and done i thought about it and figured I probably would have been better off and my throttle response would have been better but hind sight. the feeling i got from doing all that was i could have built one heck of a v8 and did it that way. But like most people i wanted to be different and have a built v6 that ran hard but I was disapointed. this time i really have been thinking. do a complete tune up. then was thinking of prochargeing it but haven't found any companies that have off the shelf kits so i would have to do it myself. unless someone knows of a place . but I'm not all that saivy one turbos or superchargers so it would be a big learning curve. but i will figure it out. thats one thing about me if i want it i will do it or figure out a way to do it. Just scared of the v6 issue again tho .
