Frustrated with my rebuild,:(

Hey there follow F body lovers,I am very new to the site. However I will say i am very happy to have found it.Now my spelling is sometimes off due to being french but I try, incase anyone would like to comment on my spelling.

OK Now my delema is I have an 84 camaro with a 2.8(I know should have dropped in a 305 or 350) I beleive American, and i rebuilt the engine on it in the last year. Now today 03/17/07 I tried to start it.well i am getting some big *POOFS* out of the carburator and some smoke and flames however no continues starts. Now the batterie was dead so we boosted it using a truck with some juice,it worles over but no start. Now looking underneath the car,,I noticed iol comming from the oil filter area..I think I may have fergotten to seal it with gasket maker or I am not sure if there was a gasket or O ring there.

So do I need to get a gasket there or just use some sealer?

For the engine I did play with the timming some (hard ot get to)grrrr.
I dropped some good fuel in the tank and carb,I adjusted timming again, and I would get some turn over spit and sputter but no more then that.

I am at end wits on this puppy for today of course I hope someone reads this and has had similar probs,I am rebuilding this car in my fathers honour whom passed away sept,05/05. It was his old beast and we decided to rebuild the engine my buddy and I,no one has looked at it or touched it but us.and we are mechanicly inclined enought to know what we are doing.Just at this point I am a little comfused, all plugs are in,fire is good, vaccums are ingaged, nutral switch is on and working.new fuel pump, new gaskets all over the engine, rear and main ceals. assembly lube was sued on the reassembly. No other leaks except for the oil filter connector to the block( I think) lol....so anyhow hope we can get some answers...

Re: Frustrated with my rebuild,:(

Your oil filter housing uses a gasket against the block. I had mine on and off a couple times after my rebuild trying to figure out why it was leaking while cranking, until I realized there was a small plug above it that was missing. I'd get that installed first.

Is the distributer in correctly? It could be 180 off if you had the no.1 piston at TDC, but on the wrong stroke.

That's the only thing I can think of at the moment as far as ignition that you didn't mention, other than the spark being good.

+ 1 on the distributor.
If the distributor is 180 Degrees off, it will backfire out the intake and smoke, but it won't try to start.

HAHA, that happened to me on my first rebuild and a decent mechanic gave me the advice to rotate the wires 180* to see (before I pulled it back apart) and VIOLA it immediately started.

If its a fresh rebuild, I'll put one up for putting the dizzy in wrong. Been there, done that.

As for the oil, there is a hard to find gasket there. I also put a very very thin layer of RTV on both sides of the gasket. There is also an o-ring on the bolt that may have gotten damaged or is overly dry-rotted.
