Re: Exaust Manifold

Well you could try getting a pair of Vise Grips on them. As tight as possible and try hittin it with a hammer or using your hands to loosen them up. Ofcourse using WD40 or any rust penetrator will help aswell.

If exhaust manifold bolts are the same in a Firebird and Camaro (3.1) then I can take them out of my camaro im parting for ya. I'll take a look at them to see if their in good shape. They should be since their the original bolts and most likely never have been taken out. Ofcourse with anything I ship I try to clean the product as best as possible. Let me know if your interested.

Re: Exaust Manifold

i use a go thru wrench, and a hammer to get stuck bolts off.

i put the wrech on(thru) the bolt, then use the hammer to tap firmly on the back (head of the bolt, screw, etc....).....its a ghetto impact (wrench, screwdriver). good ****...

im drunk. sorry...

Re: Exaust Manifold

My manifolds were so rusted i ended up cutting the heads off all the bolts. Then I pulled manifolds off leaving just studs (more room to work and it takes weight of the studs). A lot of PB (A LOT), vise grips gently tapping, all but one came out perfectly. The one left behind i welded a nut to it.

Re: Exaust Manifold

the dealer has the bolts still yet. I just bought some. I think they are specia lbolts because they have the threaded part, then the nut, then another threaded part that brackets go onto. I'd just buy new ones and start new....but they do cost a VERY pretty penny lol

Re: Exaust Manifold

For the bolt in your head, you can try a left handed drill bit.

Re: Exaust Manifold

Specs for the manifold-to-head bolts are:

M8 1.25 x 40 mm short bolt, "10.9" hardness (stamped on bolt head)

M8 1.25 x 70 mm long bolt, "10.9" hardness (stamped on bolt head)

I had bought 'em from Pep Boys; waaay back then, the local store had blue plastic bins with all kinds of 10.9 strength bolts in them. Now, all the bins have been replaced with seat covers and stickers.

So I'm not sure anymore where you could find them; try calling up some parts stores- or maybe even some engine rebuild places. But you won't find 10.9-grade hardness at a hardware store, and they've gotta be 10.9 to take the heat.

Oh- also get some washers for those bolts (so the bolt head doesn't rust to the manifold), and use plenty of anti-sieze on the threads.

Hope that helps!

Re: Exaust Manifold

Look in the phonebook for a bolt/fastner store. Here locally we have Broward Bolt, they have every bolt, nut, stud etc immaginable.

You can also put studs with nuts in place of the bolts, they are less likely to break.
