Think my main bearings are done

I have a 2.8 that has what you would call clanking sound, it's not your normal rod knock. Is it possible maybe my main bearings went bad or am I looking at replacing a rod or something?

Re: Think my main bearings are done

why would you relate rods knocking with bearings going out? maybe you threw a rod, even though that doesn't happen often on our engines thankfully.

well i know before the clanking there was a rod knock, im guessing during that time is when the main bearing goes? would that be a tough job replacing the rod?

Re: Think my main bearings are done

It would be cheaper and more time efficient to replace the bottom end of the engine(pistons/rods/crank/block) than to tear it down and replace one rod.

Main bearings aren't going to have anything to do with a rod about to snap. Your noise might even be something else, so don't write it off entirely just yet. Is the noise louder from the top of the car or the bottom? Take a long solid piece of metal and touch it to the block, then cup your ear around it. You'll hear the inside of the engine pretty well. Move it up to the heads and you can hear the rocker arms as they move up and down. You can stick it on any of the accesories(alternator, compressor, etc) and hear them as well(anywhere but a smooth whir from the pulley isn't right).

Re: Think my main bearings are done

i dont think main bearings have anything to do with it.are you sure your not talking about rod/journal bearings? because if you throw a rod you'll be replacing those. forkvoid is right though. check it out to make sure thats your problem. its kinda like changing spark plugs, you should replace them all at once. maybe one isn't working, but the rest are never too far behind.

I beg to differ on that. When I pulled my 2.8 b/c I thought I had a rod knock as soon as I dropped the oil pan the bearing on the #3 journal had moved. That was what was causing my knocking noise and was a waste of time rebuilding it. Needless to say after the rebuild I didn't like it and got me a 3.4. If I would have just dropped the oil panfrom the get go I would still have my 2.8 in the car (maybe).

Look for posts started by me, I did a write-up on how to remove the pan with the engine in the car. Don't be afraid to post questions if you get stuck.
