Are these the same engines?

yes they just have different cam setups, i am currently doing the same thing with my 89 2.8 and using a 93 s10 2.8

sounds good. also they guy said it wasnt mpfi, will i have to convert it to mpfi or what?

you dont have to I was told that you could just splice in the throttle body wiring. if you have any questions just go to my post called Throttle body to TPI in this forum, there is alot of helpful information I got out of it
