OIL prefrences ???????

so then, what do you use ?
i only ask as i changed the oil in my 03 MG and it uses - like many newer motors - quite a thin oil, wereas older cars traditionally use thicker oil. obviously with synthetic and stuff the new oils stay more consistant compared to old mineral oil thats thick cold and thin warm.
just curious
happy motoring ;-)

Used to run Torco 0w-30 before it went up to $8.50 a quart. Now I'm "cheap" and use the German Castrol 0w-30.
Synthetic only in all my vehicles.

Re: OIL prefrences ???????

I use Synthetic shell Rotella T 5w-40 weight oil in every thing.
After much reading on bobistheoilguy.com it is the best for the money. And is better then regular mobil 1.
If price is no object, go with Mobil 1 10w-40 weight "MX4T" now known as "Racing 4T", I believe. It is just about the best oil you can get but its about $8/qt. It was $8.12/qt last time I bought it a year ago.
The Rotella is $17 per gallon.
Mobil 1 is $22+ a gal.

I've been using Pennzoil 10W30 in my engines. No particular reason except that my family(mostly seasoned backyard mechanics) trusts them in their engines.

Re: OIL prefrences ???????

The only addtive package that is weaker then pennzoil is regular mobil 1.
You guys have flat tappets, SM rated motor oil doesn't have very much in the way of anti ware addtives.
Your cam could start grinding away a cam lobe with out enough of those addtives.

Re: OIL prefrences ???????

It used to be that I ran whatever I could get in the mineral oils until I began running turbochargers, began using Valvoline synthetic to help with the heat from the turbos. Since my sister came home with her husbands Ford Lightening that has never had anything but Pennzoil in it, runs like new and has never had a rebuild, over 400k on the odometer, I have been thinking about switching. That truck has had the living hell beat out of it and still runs like new, thats impressive enough for me. Personally I feel that if you change your oil regularly and don't have high heat or high performance situations (IE: turbos, boost in general, nitrous, 11-1 compression) than stick to mineral oil, its what the aviation community does. If you do run boost or anything that is high performance or very high RPM, consider a synthetic of some sort. Virtually all oils are the same, except for the race oils like AMSOIL or Rotella-T they are somewhat beyond SAE standards. Most important people for the health of your engine, CHANGE YOUR OIL ON TIME!!!!

Re: OIL prefrences ???????

Yep, the only oils that stand out are going to be your racing oils and heavy duty diesel engine oils.
The best oil filter you can get off the shelf (at Advanced Auto parts) and for the money is going to be the Puralator PureOne serries of filters. There are better filters out there but they cost several dollars, to 2x or 3x the price of the PureOne and they don't really do much more than the pureone. You can pay more and get less, examples of that are the K&N and the mobil oil filters, they cost twice as much and are not as good.
