Any cheap modifications while she's already in pieces?
Gentlemen,
I was curious as to what else I could do (free-$50) while I have everything down to my valve covers off. I'm currently just planning on putting in the E67E-B1B injectors and now an un-planned valve cover factory-match paint job, along with a new stat. I've already done the basics... distributor O ring, new cap and rotor, spark plugs, and fresh wires. Is the "penny mod" on the FPR worth doing for power? I'm not sure how it's done though...
Thanks.

port the intake, port exhaust manifolds, port/gasket match, cold air intake. the iron head 2.8 is not a performance engine and you shouldn't expect big power. If you want huge power from a V6 then swap in a 3.8 either a 4th gen 3800 or a early 3.8 from 78-87 and go turbo. I am doing all the cheap power mods to a 88 firebird for my girlfriend to drive because my l03 5spd camaro has to much power for her (kinda sad) but you can get about 200 whp out of the 2.8 as the Fiero guys have found out. But if you want some decent power out of your 2.8 then swap fiero/3.4 heads because the Fiero got the 2.8 H.O heads which are 3.4 heads so there ya go.

Replace the valve cover gasket, it won't help power but it will keep oil leaks away.
Cleaning all the gunk out of the intake helps. Maybe change out your thermo stat. If your going to pull the intake manifold off you can enlarge the coolant passage to match the head. I removed a little more than 1/16'' all the way around the opening.

Crytical Point: Not really looking to suck this thing dry for 200hp... I'd just put a 75hp shot or a swap for some major gains, but not at this moment. I'm just trying to make a decent and reliable daily driver out of a $900, 63k original mileage vehicle.
Thanks for the replies!

Any thing, depending on how hard it is. Any thing form a screw driver and wire brush to pressure washer, parts washer and break/carb cleaner.
There is no rubber coating in side the intake plenum or manifold. That is the gunk, if its rubber like then try a pressure washer then spary cans of cleaner. That should work fine.
