2.8 Port Polish

Hey, is it worth it, If i can get a 2.8 complete intake manifold in good shape,
To port and polish (can get it done for free) the snot out of it.

1. Can I Expect noticeable gains out of the box?
2. Do i need a different ecm?
3. If not, should I FastChip it ?
4. Should I throw in a compucam? (or any other cam for mostly stock engines)
5. Should I also get headers if i do this?
6. Anything Else I should do at the same time?
7. Anything I NEED to do at the same time (besides gaskets )

Thank you all

Re: 2.8 Port Polish

You should notice some gains especially in the top end. If you do go with a cam get headers and exhaust too.

Re: 2.8 Port Polish

just doing th3 intake alone wont give u much,u can port match all the pieces most attention should be put into the top/middle half meets around the short side of the bend.if ur gonan go that far u might as welkl take the heads off and clean them up as well.as far as the intake u can make it as smooth as possible since fuel isnt injected till the bottom of the intake runner

Re: 2.8 Port Polish

I am strongly considering picking up a complete intake manifold,
and heads off a 2.8

Now... Do 3.1 or 3.4 Heads bolt up to the 2.8?
Or do I need to bore out the block and put in bigger pistons.

Anyway, I want to get a set of heads and the intake (maybe just a whole
trashed engine)
Have the heads completly redone, ported and polished them selfs,
new valvs springs rockers etc. (any suggestions?)
If you had to build a 2.8 head, what would you put in it?

Will the stock computer handle worked heads and a port + polish?

Cam and headers too?

Figure while I have all that apart I could throw in new injectors too..
What is stock (15 # ?)
Any particular injector that is better than the rest?
Can the stock computer handle bigger injectors?

With all that said and done, I have also been looking at the post
in the DIY PROM board About V6 computer swap.
(The TPI or s-10 4 banger computer)
Either tune it my self, or have it done (whatever is cheaper)

So a quick Review....

Port(match) and polish Intake
Port + polish + Rework heads
Cam
Injectors
Headers
Computer Swap.

Hoping this can breath a big chunk of life into the 2.8

Is there a bigger Air sensor I should consider throwing in also?

Exact same heads.

Stock is 15lb. Some have had luck with the F1ZE Ford injectors. Look at this thread for info on the swap: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/4...injectors.html

The computer, I believe, will not handle an injector swap to a larger injector. You'd have to modify the ECM to get it to handle it right.

Look into the 165 ECM swap, if you haven't already. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...take-look.html

Re: 2.8 Port Polish

the 2.8,3.1,and 3.4 do not have the same heads, the 3.4 have the H.o heads that were option for the 2.8 and standard on the Fiero. I am doing a full port and polish on a 2.8 top end and just finished the lower piece last night. I found that the ports have horrible casting lips around just the opening so I cleaned them up. As far as the top is concerned you should do that first and just port the sh*t out of it to with in a 1/8 inch of thickness. The middle has those casting lips and I found the passender side was worse than the driver and makes sure it is smooth and even so I used a file before polishing. I'm not hoping for much but I have a 3.4 so I will get alot more than a 2.8 with the porting because it likes a little more. Also if you are taking the heads off the I would suggest cleaning up the water ports a little and make it flow a little better.

See if firstfirebird will do them. I know he was going to do a set of heads/intake for me when I finally got around to the project.

The 2.8 fuel injected heads are the same as the 3.1 and 3.4 heads.

If anyone does porting on these heads then don't grind the hump in the runner for the intake side. You can "shark fin" them but they actually help flow.

2.8/3.1/3.4 they are all the same pos iron heads. You will feel a difference porting though, its a good idea to port your intake and heads free hp. How can you beat that? Though that increase is nothing compared to aluminum heads and a better flowing intake

I would use gaskets no matter what. These enginges don't like any kind of leak.
