Ditch your stock injectors!

I'm currently running ford F1ZE injectors on my otherwise stock motor and thought it was worth mentioning how much better they are than the stock ones. Atomization and response is 1000X better, I noticed a big difference right away. Thanks to jstrdn90rs for suggesting them.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

That definitely sounds like something to look into. Does it require an ECU reprogram or any other modifications to use those? Where would be the best place to pick them up (ford dealer?) and do you have a ballpark on price?

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

You dont think that that has anything to do with the fact that your previous injectors were 20 years old and possibly full of gunk?

I'm curious about these as well. I need new injectors for the 3.4 anyways.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

fictmitch-Don't need to reprogram the ecm, they're 15# just like the stock ones. You could get them from a dealership, online, parts store- just about anywhere. Last time I checked they were $150/set new, you could get them cheaper reman, or you could go the pennypincher way and dust off a set out of a junkyard 2.9L bronco/ranger. Most yards only want $5/ea.

rocluvr0013-My stock injectors probably weren't in perfect shape, but the F1ZE injectors are a much better design. Early injectors were crude by today's standards.

2.8RS- you might want to go with slightly larger injectors, 15#'s are only safe to about 150hp on a v6.

I installed these on my engine before I did a '165 ecm swap and it made a noticeable improvement with the stock ecm as well. It surged and burbled at idle with the stock injectors, it idles like glass with the new ones.

Those injectors were used on 2.9L engines from about 87 to 92... so they're not exactly newer than what some of us already have. What makes the design superior to stock #15 GM injectors?

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Theyre a Bosch injector,, I dont replace a delphiu injector ever again with another delphi.. way to many comebacks.

the 15# injectors were also found on any 89-98 ford 3.8L engine like the thunderbird or mustang.

I remember doing a vette once (19# mustang) and the guy was so impressed on how the car was smoother and had a dramatic improvement off idle and this was a 20K mile car.

From what I was reading, the F1ZE are Denso injectors, not Bosch.

The injectors are just as old as what we already have, so what makes the F1ZE so much better than our stock ones?

I thought that it was some company that made the injectors for the Ford motors and that there were different sizes. I already have the 3.4 injectors but probably need a rebuild.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

I had some FOTE-??? 19lb injectors on my 3.4 for a while. Rich at idle, made top end scream.

Rbob has posted a link to a chart here many times for me alone that has a running list of different brand/partnumber/lb rating of many brand of injectors.

There are also some 18.5 lb injectors off some buick 3.8's that are better design.

A more efficient coil and a better pintle design. There's a reason Ford used them on the turbo t-birds. There's sevral versions of it, F1ZE-B4C, F1ZE-A2A, F1ZE-A2B, F1ZE-C2A, ect. They're either 14#, 15# or 19#, not sure which one's which but they're the same basic design. Just about anything's better than delphi's.

Ouch, sorry, I dont remember the year(s). If you search, rbob tells me about them and they are on the chart I mentioned. Its been over a year though as I have had my v8 11 months.

I am betting that they are from series II motors.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Ford injectors are typically rated at a lower fuel pressure, causing it to run richer in a GM, correct? (Denso vs Delphi)
----------
Also, ttypecamaro has discovered that the MAF based ECM's run lean and can use an injector change anyways.

So that means that 3.1 injectors are good for a 2.8?

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Not sure what psi these are rated at, but it's not a huge difference on injectors this small. Maybe a 2 lb/hr difference. I've found that my old ('870) ecm was programmed a little rich. The later ('302) ecm was probably different.

B185c, what was the exact part number and where did you purchase them? I am interested in trying them to get better gas mileage along with better performance and idle.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

I went the cheapo route and cleaned off some junkyard parts. Just look up Ford F1ZE injectors and you should find the 15# injectors. Mine came out of a '90(?) 2.9L Ranger. Just about any parts store can get them for you.

Hey Cool ??..I was hoping someone would catch on sooner or later?..I hope that suggestion made an improvement. It did on mine,I adjusted the valves the same time I did the injectors and you could feel the difference.I was running the 3.4 Pingels and on the freeway(screamin ape) but dont use them in town stop-go idle was irratic and blew out an O2.Probably would need some
computer recalibratiing.OKay I have another suggestion for you guys and its a simple one.The Alternator gets power from two different areas?.one is from the battery and the other is from the starter ?..which has a fusible link.I know a lot of guys are having issues with the regulator failing on the alt.I think its due to electrical feedback during starting and you can cut the wire from the starter and jump it to the battery post on the alt.Goes from three wire hook-up to two?If you like you can add the fusible link in-line but I didnt.I didnt want the fusible link failing and leaving me stranded somewhere and the car is already too low to get my azz underneath it without a jack?I noticed the ford injector has similar coil set up as the accels ,so I was reading somewhere that the coils have a better design then the stock GM's.

The engine they were used in was the Ford Cologne V6: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cologne_V6_engine#2.9

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

It will run a little rich until it gets into closed loop, I haven't noticed an impact on mileage. But I'm using a retuned '165 so I can't say for sure.

I didnt check my mileage when I went from the stock injectors over to the Fords since I had other issues at the time and never checked the mileage.I can say the increase in throttle response was overwhelming, big change.I had a throttle lag ..when coming to almost a complete stop and then taking off.I would push the throttle down and it would just sit there for a few seconds and then take off?.After the injector swap..never again.I havent checked my mileage in the car yet,but I want to say it somewhere between 20-25?.I dont think your going to see a drastic change ,but you will in the response! My engine is all stock..for now.I will be swapping a set of ported heads and cam in the next few months, see how they respond to that upgrade.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

I got these and tried them out. The injectors are a little shorter than the stockers, they look just like 2.8 injectors except they are shorter by just enough so that they wouldn't seal to the manifold, and I put the lock rings on them and one of the injectors leaked gas over the motor, not to mention I could hear it leak the gas. What did I do wrong? I grabbed a dozen of them out of a Bronco II and a Ranger with the 2.9.

How did you guys get these to work The car fired up but the injector leaked fuel all over the back of the motor. I put new o-rings on them too. Did you guys use the lock rings or what? I would really like to make these work since they sound nice.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Sorry for the late response. I forgot to mention that you need to use slightly thicker o-rings because the o-ring grooves on the ford injectors are slightly smaller than the stock injectors. Don't forget the petroleum jelly.

I just took one of the old ones to a part store and got slightly larger ones. Don't know size or part#, I'd have to take them off my car to tell you.

You can go to about any size you want. But what will it do to your motor? Flood it out, or run it lean?

Your 2.8 has low 15lb injectors in it. Unless you have major mods done, you dont need anything more or less then that. The injectors they speak of on here have a different nozzle that helps atomize the fuel better.

I had the stock 3.4 Injectors in my ride for a few months..and the biggest issue I had was when the car came to an idle it was like it was searching for the correct setting..sometimes almost dying.RPM gauge would fluctuate like crazy..until one day it wouldnt idle and the O2 decided it wanted a vacation.
I wouldnt go any bigger over stock unless you have some mods to the engine.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

So if there's 15# and 19#, what would be the best one for my 17# equipped 3.4?

19# injectors. Gives you a little more 'wiggle' room, and the ecm will compensate for the change on it's own eventually.

I may be getting a set of these, I have not yet gotten the old ones tested but I suspect there are some baddies in there.

I don't think my 302 ecm has even managed to compensate for the 3.4 with the headers and intake yet.

I'll have to wait until I do the 165 swap. My current injectors are brand-new accel's, so they shouldn't be too bad for the time being.

It won't be perfect because the ecm still assumes that the injectors (and everything else) are stock and calculate for that, but once the ecm realizes it's not running at stoich it will correct. A '165 swap solves that prob.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Tried these again and they leak again with brand new o-rings for the stock injectors. I went by a Napa and Carquest and neither could find any thicker o-rings. Does anyone have a part number for the right o-rings? I think that my 3.1 injectors are getting worn out, I did do the "penny mod" for the FPR and it helped the car off idle. That small mod is worth it.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Came off of a 8? Bronco 2.9 V6. Really its only 1 or 2 of the injectors leaking. Enough to puddle up on the intake when the car is started.

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Those are the correct injectors... not sure why you're having so much trouble with them. Anyone else have suggestions?

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

Hi Guys,

So does this injector swap actually increase bhp or just give a more responsive engine? I'd guess my 91 3.1 injectors have never been touched, will the Ford 15 ones work?

Sorry to sound dumb but what is a 165 ECM swap and what's the benefits of doing it?

Thanks,

Ian

Re: Ditch your stock injectors!

These injectors are supposed to be more responsive. I'm don't know much about the 165 ECM swap but it is supposed to be a better tune than the stock one.
