Pulling a 3.4 from a 4th Gen

I found a 3.4 at the yard. I am looking at swapping it for my 3.1 since it just hit 200,000 miles...
Anyone pulled this motor from a 4th gen before? Any tricks to it, problems in getting it out, does it come out the top or do I have to drop it out the bottom, can I pull the front off and take it out that way, etc.

Any help from you pros that have done this before would be much appreciated...

Re: Pulling a 3.4 from a 4th Gen

The 3.4 swap is quite possibly the most talked about topic on here...

I pulled one from a 4th gen with a perfect front end. It sucked. A lot. My knuckles were red for a week. I had help, and eventually needed another person as well. This motor absolutely sucks to pull out from the top. Supposedly, they're made to come out the bottom, but no way to do that in the scrap yard. My suggestion is to get it down to the LIM, with all accessories off. Pull it out from there and pray to God. You'll need it.

Ive never pulled a 3.4 before...but I would assume that if you take off the intake, accessories, and pull out the radiator it would be much easier.

Easiest way to pull the engine is to drop the whole K-member, but that may not be possible at the salvage yard. If you have to resort to taking it from the top, you'll have to pull the radiator and maybe some of the accessories.

I had the pleasure of removing one from the top last week. Lose the top end (heads and all), unbolt the trans and yank it.

Give 'er hell, gently.

I pulled mine with the trans attached and unbolted it on the ground. Kept the LIM and heads on. Most difficult part of the whole process was getting the bolts off the UIM from underneath the dash. I still want to find the GM design team for that and punch every last one of them right in the kisser.

Re: Pulling a 3.4 from a 4th Gen

just unhook all the wire harnass and un bolt the kmember and tranny and shock tower mountes and it all drops right out. I did the one in my 4 gen in about 45mins and I just jacked it up and put the jack stands under the front stub behind the wheel well.. it goies good. you dont have to pull the engine apart and pull it from the top Thats ALOT OF WORK and hard on the hands.

And you're going to do this in a junk yard? Good luck.

My junk yard doesn't allow items such as jacks and jack stands. All vehicles are up on the two-rim method(one rim horizontal, vertical on top of that, welded together).
