Best V6 exhaust?
Best V6 exhaust?
Me and my girlfriend have just picked up a 1987 Camaro 2.8 litre with 170,XXX KMs on it for 700 bucks. Body has lost most of its clear coat and has some surface rust but under the hood looks good. I turned it over and it sounds confident but doesn't spark so lets hope its something minor. Its got a cherry bomb glass pack on it right now and I can just emagine what kind of ******* hell that will sound like once we get her started. I'm a big V8 fan but I also wanted a 5 speed so we got this one. I've got a 1975 pontiac lemans with a chevy 350 that I got from my dad with a cherry bomb on it and it sounds kind of harsh.
I'm looking for something that doesn't break the bank, doesn't have that snappy sound to it, has the nessesary muscle car low note, and doesn't make my head explode inside the car on long trips. I'm looking for something mature and sporty but not try-hard and annoying (lets be real, its got the little engine). With that said, I'm not trying to make it sound like a V8 and I know it never will, I just like the throaty sound of the V8 and strongly dislike the snappy rice sound of 4 bangers and most 6s.
I've heard good things about the flowmaster 70 with V8s and I-6's but heard nothing about them with this 2.8 litre. The only thing I've found by searching the forums is the Dynomax cat back system which from the youtube clips sounds okay and is a good price but I'm looking for some alternatives. We'd also like to have dual outlets for that nice symetrical look if possible haha so does that eliminate the FM 70 as a possibility?

This is a 2.8 in a truck but it actually sounds quite good... kinda what I'm going for maybe a tad more tame

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
My vote is the Dynomax cat-back. My opinion is that the flowmaster sounds like crap on these engines. Most people mistake my 3.1 for a v-8 at idle(only at idle though
) Flowmaster is just to raspy for me.

Hmmm... yeah, I think most Flowmasters do have that raspy quality to them which I think would bring out the worst in a V6, but have you tried the Flowmaster 70 or Flowmaster 50 Delta? The deltas are supposed to tame the rasp noises and the one in that video with the 2.8 S15 or whatever that is sounds pretty tame.
I'm heard some clips of the dynomax and yeah they sound good at idle like you said but start to sound rather cheap and overly "vee-sixy"

I put a stock 1999 formula cat back on my 2.8 car and it sounds pretty good. Its not really annoyingly loud and you could probably find one pretty cheap out of a junkyard. ill try to get a video clip for ya

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
Hi, I have a 3.4L and it has 3in cat back that is single till it goes over the axel then goes to dual 3in in the back. It has a summit 18" gass pack in the middle. it sounds like a lt1 up till 3500rpm. Then sounds like a ferrie after that. I had a 2 1/4 lin befour that with a flow master and it was real raspy.

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
Get some headers, a high flow cat, and a Dynomax or Magnaflow 2.5" catback. I had both on my Camaro and like both of them. The Magnaflow is a bit louder than the Dynomax was.

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
Most people go with the SuperTurbo. Borla and the UltraFlo tend to be a bit pricey...although I remember one guy who had an UltraFlo on his, but I dont remember if there was a video of it. If the turbo makes my car to quiet I may go with the UltraFlo.
Re: Best V6 exhaust?
I have an Ultra-Flo on my V6 bird.
I posted a soundclip here ... long time ago ...
This is the thread where te clip can be found :

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
wow like the Dynomax Ultra Flo SS. Really deep. but It is true that the price is pretty high compared to the Dynomax Super Turbo. Luckily I got a few month to think on it.

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
yeah The glass pack will sound crap - ive got one now and its just a big headache - came with the car though. i would get some pacesetter headers, bolt the down pipes on and ditch the crossover and anything else :-)

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
i like the honest sound of the engine thats all, id have it that way everytime, yes yes its no v8 - the best sounding v8 i had was in a dodge ram, something about the way the engines idle, real purposefull. but given a choice if i was guna have a loud exhaust it just be straight through, the only other thing i might do on my daily is put extra silencers on, so its a real nice long distance cruise and no hasle when i wake up at three in the morning to goto work with a hangover :-)

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
I have a 92 RS with the 3.1 v6. I opted for the Dynomax super turbo catback system. I got it @ Summit Racing WLK-17493 was the part # and the price was nice. It is a stock looking kit and, like Grimmcs said, it sounds nice... at idle especially. Inexpensive, lasted 3 years and counting, and sounds good.

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
well... i have no exhaust... i know know...i did it when i did not know anything about cars... i bought a glasspack, put it where the cat went, and hacked up the rest of the exhaust to get it out... makes a terrible hum at highway speeds... haha... but the dynomax sounds good fro what i have heard, and its affordable, i think that with headers, and a cam, should sound nice... and give a better push as well...

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
For awhile I ran a Catco 2.5 high-flow cat with a 2.5 i-pipe and 2.5 dynomax single in-dual out muffler. It sounded nice.
When I swapped in a 3.4 and headers, it still sounded nice at idle or when cruising with a light load, but while accelerating it sounds way too loud and *****.
I'm planning on getting a quieter muffler sooner or later. (soon as the roof is fixed after hitting an elk recently)

Re: Best V6 exhaust?
My formula has the 80 series flowmaster catback setup... 3 inch piping and I love Flowmasters on v8's. I think it gives a really aggressive sound, but imo flowmasters sound really out of place on 6's and 4's... They weren't designed for motors that small... I don't care what flowmaster says...
I too have a dynomax super turbo exhaust from summit racing on my RS... and it does sound really nice at idle...
