I have a 1989 Chevy Cavalier with the Z24 Package. I was going to just replace the 2.8L thats in it and go from there but I was wondering if what I am assuming is correct. Which is that a 191cid or a 189cid(Which I heard have intake problems) 3.1L is the exact same size and would be a good swap for more Horse and Torque. The engine in it now runs but barely I believe it to have bad heads or lifters in either case just as easy to replace it with a fresh engine. Anyone out there to help me?
I would think so but not for sure have you tried these guys http://www.v6z24.com/jbodyforum/j-bo...rmance-f2.html .
I'll try them. Thank you bud. Anyone else on here have any info?
The genII 3.1 ('90 to '93) will be a direct swap.
There is information on v6z24.com about this swap.
Basically you will need to retain the 2.8L throttle body and EGR, to be used on the 3.1 and retain the original electronics. The later 3.1s had a different injector harness If you get a later 3.1 you can use your 2.8 injector harness), but other than that it's a plug 'n' play deal.
For a real kick in the pants and not much more work go with a 3400 swap. Requires a new custom front mount (I will have these avaiable again in the new year), a different TB cable, a different power steering pump (the 3400 pump will work), and a custom down pipe. Many people use the original 2.8/3.1 ECM with good success. Better if it's tuned for the 3400.
There is a lot of information about the 3400 swap on www.v6z24.com and on http://domestic.3400z24.com/
