lower intake runners

So I started to take some stuff apart today. I took the TB off so I could get to the thermostat and change it out and put a new radiator hose on. I'd been wanting to take the intake off anyway and give it a paint job with some engine paint so I started taking that apart too, and while I was doing that I decided I'd paint the valve covers too.

So my question is, how do i get the lower part of the runners off. The fuel rail seems to be in the way and I'm kinda wary about messing with that. And do you need to take the lower runners off to get to the valve covers? The covers seem to use some weird star pattern bolts to keep them on, what do I need to get the bolts out? And finally is there anything else I can do while all this stuff is apart?

Re: lower intake runners

If i remember correctly, there are 2 bolts holding the fuel rail to the MIM. Take those out and pull the fuel rail off...this may be a little rough depending how long its been in there, the o-rings like to stick in the LIM. Than there are 6 bolts holding the MIM to the LIM...take those out and you're home free.

Will the injectors come out with it?

Re: lower intake runners

yes, injectors come out too. take a screwdriver to help pry the rail loose. you'll probably need new o-rings. they're like $2 for a set of 16. there are 10mm nuts on those valve cover studs. use a deep socket to get those. the star shape on the end of the studs are a 5/32 or 7/32 socket.

Re: lower intake runners

Haha, that usually happens for me too, just not this time.

Hmm, i couldnt see any nuts on the valve covers, but I got soem deep wells so I'll try it as soon as I get the chance. Just got a couple inches of snow last night so the project's on hold :P. rest of the week's gonna be 50 and sunny though!!!
