egr leak?

I have an 85 2.8 MPFI that has been modified to the extreem. I have what appears to be an egr valve with a constant bypass of exhaust going into the intake. I removed the egr valve and noticed that exhaust is always allowed into the intake through a hole that is not part of the pintetl valve. This caused a rough idle and if egr is removed and caped off it idles great. Is this right or is the wrong valve on my car?

Re: egr leak?

After removing the EGR valve I notice that the plunger that sets against the seat was missing. Has this been seen before? Where did it go? Installed a new valve and everything works great!
