so all i need to do is block off the hole in the intake? do i need to cap the vacuum lines that go to the existing egr? ive searched but still foggy on the issue.

 

seeing that its easier to just block off the opening of the egr, i did that. i used an old license plate but it really wasnt heavy enough, so i made an angle piece out of aluminum, no leaks but i reused the old gasket. when i get a chance i will put some copper rtv on it. the bolts wouldnt go down flush because they have a bit of a shoulder on them, and i dont have ony washers so i used a couple 3/8 nuts i had in my tool box. i drove a little and no codes came up. it idles at about about 850 rpm. i also just put a screw in the vacuum line so it wouldnt leak.

Question, what does removing the EGR do?

 

save me $35. The egr (exhaust gas recirculation valve) takes exhaust gasses back into the intake. it only does this 1. when the car is warm (not hot just normal) 2. under cruising throttle. WOT makes no difference, but when the valve is stuck open it lets too much of the exhaust gas into the intake, causing a lean condition, and hesitation while driving. the later V6's use a digital egr, which is very expensive to replace. so its more popular on the newer cars to do this.

 

I know what the EGR does, what does removing do besides save you money? Or is there no real difference besides a small weight reduction?

 

I just hammered a wad of aluminum in my manifold & spread some jb weld over it. Looks like crap but I don't really care about the motor in it right now. I have heddmann headers so the ex. side didn't matter. Removing it doesn't really do anything performance wise, but makes it easier to work on. Less clutter.

 

For me, it saved me money. I dont think it affects anything, but its common to hear mpg loss, and gain. I dont know what it was before, Ill let you know what it is now.

 

I had to replace my EGR, was getting horrible mpg because it was stuck open, replaced it and ran better. If I knew it could run ok without it, I wouldnt' have spent the $35. Oh, and the $110 after breaking the solenoid...Oh well, live and learn, right?

 

i was worried that it was a vacuum issue and not a bad egr also. this was it just shuts the car up for me. i know it has a bad vacuum leak bc when i change the heater controls it hisses at me for awhile before switching.

 

Everything on this camaro was original factory parts when I bought it, I was amazed it made the trip home. All ignition parts were bad, replaced all those. Replacing the EGR had the largest effect that I noticed.

 

MAF made a huge difference for mine.

 

Yeah, the MAF relay was unplugged, didn't notice until I gutted out the air box.
