My stock tach always reads more than 7k. When I start up the car the needle goes to the left then back to 7k.

Is the tach broke or is there something else going on??

Here's a vid showin it off -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjFelxfsDe4

The video shows you exactly what it does.

Start the car up, needle moves left then right back over to 7.

Check your gauges, could be a short or a break in the circuit board on the back of the cluster, mine was doing stuff similar.

looks like it's definitely the tach and not something that would effect engine performance. seeing how you have an automatic I don't know how bad you want a tach, but I would really really really want one in my 5 speed if I didn't already have it.

Resistor in the board on the back of the cluster could also do that to the tach.

lol Yea I mean its THAT big of a deal since I've been driving like this for 2 years but it would be nice to have everything working properly.

I'll pull out the cluster and take a look it. Someone was selling a cluster for cheap so maybe I'll scoop that up.

you've got the crappy cluster IMO, I like the one I have where all the guages look to be circular. just to make sure look on your coil and check if everything is plugged in. should be 2 harness connectors with 2 wires each.

I know many new Pontiacs have gauges that sweep, it almost looks like it's doing that only backwards..

Re: Is the problem just my Tach (stock) or something more??

Okay so I got another cluster and now with this one the tach, when the car is idle, sits @ 4-5k, press the gas and it goes pass 7k.

..............

I did notice that one of the contacts that goes in the tach was silver and not gold like the rest. I doubt that could be the problem tho.
