Cold Air Intake Location, Yes or No?

Hey there.
I have a cold air intake in my 89 firebird that runs to a hole cut in the engine compartment on the exact opposite side of the battery. (So Passenger side) Which I believe is a spot where most people with cold air'd firebird run theirs. However would it make a difference to have the actual cone filter on the other side of that hole? As of right now it is still inside the engine compartment and sucking air through the 3"+- hole.
Am I at risk of hydro lock if I just extend the air intake through that whole so that the cone filter is on the under side of the cut hole?

Thanks for any help!
Jared

That is exactly my setup. I have run like that for over a year and never had a problem. The advantage is you are getting cooler air. The air in the engine compartment is way too hot. As long as you use a quality filter, like a K&N, not paper, it should be fine.

With the filter still in the engine compartment, the amount of cool air coming in, barely offsets the temp of the hot underhood air.

Put you a cone filter on the underside & seal it, so that only cooler air can get to the filter from the outside.

If you can find a way, form a duct to scoop outside air to the new filter location. It will not be Ram Air, but increase the availability of cooler air, vs semi warm, stale air.

That is where my cold air intake is. I run the largest cone filter that will fit in that space and I removed the fog lights to get more air to the filter. Never had an issue b/c I don't drive through deep water.

Thats my setup too. I have never had an issue driving through deep water (I avoid it) but I was with my buddy when he hydro locked his '98 Camaro with SLP ram air scoop. We went through about a 6 inch deep puddle when the engine died. He tried to restart it and the starter sheared the bolts off the flywheel!!!
