2.8L MPFI camshaft? Anybody.......

I need to buy a new camshaft for my '87 2.8L rebuild.

Is it TRUE that only a cam with a 12 degree lobe separation will function on the MPFI engines without creating problems??

On the summit website, there are 3 camshafts with that profile: Lunati, Melling, and Edelbrock. Of the 3, only the Edelbrock says not computer compatible. I would prefer the Edelbrock for my engine. I don't understand, somebody please help me with this confusion.

check out the stats under the edelbrock camshaft. if it has the same exact stats as the others, then there is no reason why it wouldn't be computer compatible

I (and a few others) have the Melling MTC-5 and have absolutely no problems at all, I love it. Its a great cam, especially considering the cost. Others lately have been going with a Delta cam, do a search for either of these cams and youll find some good info. edelbrock, your probably paying mostly for the name. Uncommon companies arent always a bad thing to go with.

I do agree about there not being anything wrong with buying an uncommon name for camshafts, however, I was most interested in Edelbrock's RPM advertised ranged for their cam.

The Melling camshaft does appear to have a "stronger" profile than the Lunati, which is what I'm looking at as well. Is there a noticeable difference compared to stock??? Do you recommend a torque converter upgrade for it; probably not...

the melling cam specs i belive are given at .005 instead of .050 so dbl check that

the 260 grind works great with stock ecms, and require no tunning but i wouldnt go any larger then that.and of course if u do some tunning ull get even more out of the 260.

delta is a great company to deal with, infact if u can find an off the shelf cam u like they can grind u the same cam at a fraction of the cost

btw if ur staying pretty mild with the car a 260 cam and an v6 s10 converter will do wonders though the converter isnt required

So are you saying a camshaft grind does Not need to have the 112 degree lobe separation to be compatible with the ECM??

Just don't go over the 260 duration mark unless other upgrades are done??

Well, I have every possible upgrade for my engine I believe, except forced induction or nitrous. Engine is fully bored, Eagle Crank, MSD ignition, Headers, Thermomaster Chip, Hypertech thermostat and fan switch, High Volume oil pump, 2 1/2" MagnaFlow Exhause, headers, Larger cooling fan, etc.........

Re: 2.8L MPFI camshaft? Anybody.......

I never did have the car put on a dyno. I ended up getting bored and put a '98 V6 Camaro after the original rebuild. Both engines were great and nicely responsive. I looked at the car as being a fun toy, not a serious racer. I was definitely creating more torque, horsepower, and speed, with the added benefit of better fuel economy. I was getting 35/36 highway mpg.
All in all, I can't wait to buy another 3rd Gen Camaro again, but I'll make it a V8 instead, just because of limited aftermarket engine parts for the V6, and of course: Real Performance.
~Best of Luck~

oh okay thanx for the fast response, I have a 2.8, and i was just wondering if buying the dynomax super turbo and pacesetter headers plus a new cam would be worth it
