I closed my deck lid this morning and somehow manged to knock loose this part. I have no clue what it is, or where it came from. All I know is it came from the back and weighs a ton.




Any ideas? Also, Up front underneath the front chin theres a big ball with a couple wires going to it. I have no idea wtf it is or if it serves a purpose, But it too is kinda heavy and if its pointless could I pull it out?

Btw, car is an 89 2.8

 

The part in the pic...I have no idea. Although it looks like it had one of the clamps, you have in the top of the second pic, that has been worn away on the bend.

And the "big ball" thats up front is probably the vacuum reservoir. Mine is on the driver side, under the battery...but there were some changes between years so Im not sure if its on the same side. Is this the ball, right in front of the tire....

 

Thats exactly it. Same place too. Guess it does have a purpose then.

I looked around more today around the back and near the axle for any signs of where that thing came from. I've asked a couple people today too and they all had no idea what it was. So I guess I'll keep looking and see if I can find out atleast where it came from.

 

well i also have an 89 2.8. that is strange to me. Out of all the times i have hade my car on a lift ii have never seen that. i just did my fuel filter last weekend and just put my car up there to look around cant find any thing like it. does you car have lots of rot or parts off of it maybe i just cant see it above somthing. Maybe the last person to have it was adding weight back ther to pull some wheelies

 

Lol don't think that lil weight could shift enough around to get this car to wheelie, She's lacking a little bit of power right now. Not much rot but a little bit of rust. The back suspension is a little bit iffy, but everything else is decent.

On a side note, my exhaust slaaaaays. Its a cherry bomb glasspack right after the cat then dumps down. With the idle at around 500-700 it sounds mean.

 

Wow, I never saw that working on it... How's the car running? You put a new exhaust? Post some pics!

I didn't realize it was in the back... I was in an autoshop class where people would put stupid sh*t in others cars, maybe someone shoved it in there for a joke?

 

Its running pretty good now. It had some issues with the vacuum causing it to idle really high and never in the same range, replaced some lines and now its good. Alternator finally died fully so thats next thing to buy. Still haven't gotten around to actually registering it yet lol.

I'll put up some exhuast pics when I go to work on it today. I might look around once more but I think this part is pointless. Hasn't made a difference without it. I'm just baffled about it...it just fell down and didn't leave any sign. Nothing else back there is anywhere near as rotted as this thing, So I guess its not from this car. If it fell off the car while driving it would do some serious damage to any car behind it, or if anyone ran it over.

 

Did you find a transmission mount? I know the one I had on there required a cross-member.. And I didn't want to spend any more money on it..

That alternator had been bad since I bought it.. But it made it to Grand Bend and back without a hitch..

 

I'm PRETTY sure that's an exhaust weight.. I've seen em under crown vics and stuff alot of times. They attach these weights to various parts of the exhaust and it balances it out. I could be wrong but it looks like it used to have a clamp that went all the way around a pipe that broke/rotted off.

 

I just bolted the mount plate to the cross member and everything has been fine since. When we drove it home from my buddies we forgot it didn't have a mount and just bombed the **** outta it. tranny was just slapping the floor, it was pretty cool lol. I tested the alt a few days after I picked it up and it still ran with the positive terminal disconnected on the battery. Slowly its been getting worse and the other day it died. Oh well. 30$ for a new one.


I'll have a look under my moms crown vic tonite, If I see anything like it then I guess I know the answer. The exhaust has always been a bit squirelly on this car so idk.

 

It's a bolt on vibration dampener for the exhaust. It uses the u-clamp to hold tight and helps to add mass to the exhaust so it doesn't rattle as much. It's just rusted through. Make sure you check the rest of the vehicle for rust as it appears that you live in a high corrosion area.

 

Thanks for the answer! I'm not running the stock exhaust anymore so i don't need it on anyway. Its the only thing on the car that is that rusted though. the rear axle/suspension is a little iffy, but not as bad as this.

Yea I live in Ontario Canada, In the winter we put down alot of salt and that just eats away. I'm not the original owner so I don't know if this was ever winter driven.

 

i dont think ive ever seen one that big tho
