2.8L and 3100 v6, which one?

I'm getting a 2.8L v6 camaro and researching into its limits/capabilities with money into it versus a v8 swap, and am contemplating whether or not a 3100 would be a better option as i have it in my current car.
Or if some parts off the 3100 could beef up the 2.8L ie. intake manifold, cylinder heads and such, and if so which ones would see a benefit on the 2.8L.
Basically I have a 2.8L and a 3100, whats the best possible setup between the two? And whats the best possible setup if I want to keep the 2.8L in it and not go as far as a full engine swap but just pull some parts of the 3100 to upgrade it, also I should note that I will eventually want to turbocharge the engine.

well a 3100 is FWD so the engine it self will not swap. the heads and intake will swap over, however you'll still have a 2.8L engine just with better flow which will make more power. There is more to the swaping than just bolting on though. I'm to tired to list it all right now. my advise find a 3.4 RWD block and build from that using the 3100 stuff. and just the 2.8 as a daily driver till the new engine is ready.

Re: 2.8L and 3100 v6, which one?

Right, I rather figured an engine swap wouldn't work due to that reason, the main thing I was hoping to be doable would be to swap heads and intake over, but wanted to check if they'll fit and if they are better airflow and power, also will the 2.8 heads and intake fit on the 3100? Cause that would be great if so, don't much care if my 94 Buick century has a lot of power..... And do you by any chance know the material's used for the respective manifolds and heads? Ie. would I be able to lose some weight also with the swap?

If I had to buy an engine it would probably be a v8, trying to make the best of what I have more or less though, and building a 3.1 off of a 3.4 seems like it would use the potential of the larger block, I'm trying to max whatever engine is used.

All that being said I'll probably do a top end swap, if you could link me a post/thread or know what all goes into it that would be great. And do you by chance know how big the increase in airflow and power is?

that link should just about cover most every thing. There is a thread on here some where that has actual flow numbers from the old iron heads compared to the new heads. I'll see if I can find it.

The 3100 top end is a sweet swap and id love to do it. Talk to firstfirebird and gimmics about it and they can help you out greatly with it. What year is the 3100 from. Any year will work but i think(correct me if im wrong) but the 2000 and up had better flow. Ive heard from ppl that its like night and day compared to the stock iron heads. You can make some pretty good numbers n/a not including if you go turbo charged. If firstfirebird comes up with an "easier" way of doing it im down for going to the junk yard and grabbing a 3x00 motor and doing the swap. Seeing as im going the turbo route that would help me out amazingly!

Well basically the issue with 2.8/3.1 head swaps is the crank sensor. Ideally someone would offer a kit (ahem, firstfirebird) but that hasn't happened yet. I've looked at a few different ways to make one fit and you could use the 24X sensor & modify the reluctor on the backside of a 3.4 balancer to send a 7X signal. You'd have to use the 3.4 timing cover or make a bracket to mount the sensor. Since you have to clearance the timing cover for the LIM it'll be easier just to use the 3.4 cover. Then you just need to hack up the exhaust. Otherwise it's pretty much a bolt together deal.

lol that was my hint to firstfirebird also...if he would would make a kit available for it id love to do the swap. I just sold the 96 skylark i had with the 3100 in it tho! Oh well...by the time firstfirebird gets a kit out to the public ill have another 3x00 motor waiting for me to play with anyway

Re: 2.8L and 3100 v6, which one?

Kind of renewing one of my old threads from when I was a complete novice to engines....anyway, do any of you guys know what kind of headers will work on a hybrid 2.8/3400.....obviously 3400 headers won't work because they're made for a FWD car, and 2.8 headers simply wouldn't be big enough, and wouldn't match up with the heads(I'm guessing, I would have to check to verify that....) but assuming so, I was thinking headers for a 3.4l Camaro would work?? Can anyone verify that or tell me of a set that would?

You just need to offset the bolt holes on stuff for the 2.8 with a grinder. Ports match up ok, bolts are wider.

That's manageable enough, will that be restrictive on the flow at all though with 3400 heads on there? Also here's the picture I was talking about, I don't really know how to link it in a PM...

Re: 2.8L and 3100 v6, which one?

I used header flanges for iron heads when i made a set of headers for a 3400 swapped cavalier several years ago. bl85c is right, you just oval the holes a little vertically and they fit fine.

you can see how much in this pic:

With 1.5" primaries there is a slight overlap at the corners of the D port, 1 5/8" clears just fine though. I'm not sure if there is 1 5/8" headers are available for these cars though..
