I've searched around the forum but I'm not quite sure I've got this in right. Does anyone have a picture of how the throwout bearing attaches to the clutch fork? Right now I have it on the fork with the ring under the black clips on the clutch fork. Me and my dad have reinstalled the transmission but now I'm having second thoughts. I haven't actually driven the car, we still have to bolt on the torque arm. I have worked the clutch a bit, it seems to be fine no weird noises or anything. I had to push in the clutch so we could get the transmission to seat all the way. I've pushed in the clutch all the way to the firewall and it was fine as far as I can tell.

 

If you post up a pic, someone might be able to tell you if it's right or not. I didn't take a pic of mine before I had the bellhousing in place, and I can't even seem to find that pic at the moment (I hope it wasn't on the SD that got fried last year!).

Unless, of course, you don't want to drop the trans again. Either way, I seem to remember that the spring sort of holds the bearing in place during reassembly.

BTW, you shouldn't need to get on the clutch during reinstallation as you should have lined everything up as you put it together. Put the trans in a gear (preferably 4th) and spin the output shaft to line up the splines.

:edit: BTW, I hope you remembered to put a little chassis grease on the pivot points for the clutch fork, the surface of the throwout that rides on the fork, and the inner surface of the throwout that rides on the trans snout.

 

Ya we did put a little grease on those points. Not a lot, we didn't want any to get on the clutch plate. I'm pretty sure the throwout bearing is installed correctly, but we didn't see how the old one was in cause it was busted and fell into the bellhousing when we removed the trans.

 

All of the parts on the fork go inside the groove on the throw-out bearing. This includes the spring clips.

Putting the fork inside the groove and the clips on the outside of the ring will prevent the clutch assembly from working correctly.

thanks Rob. I searched on the transmissions board and finally found a photo of how it should be and I put it on wrong. I checked my haynes manual before I did this but it didn't really show me how it was supposed to go. O well, me and my Dad will pull the trans out again and fix it. At least I caught it before any damage was done.

i think i put the larger part of the throwout bearing facing the pressure plate and fingers ..is this right?,,what can happen if i try running the car this way?...why is haynes so vague on this subject on their manuals!!!,,,,thanks.

 

Haynes is vague on everything because it's a really cheap manual. Try a GM service manual if you really want a good manual.

When you look at the throw out bearing, it's shaped like a T. The base of the T clips into the clutch fork. The large flat top surface of the throw out bearing goes towards the fingers on the pressure plate.

 

ok thanks...for a moment there i thought i had put it in the wrong way...thank god!...what about the clutch pedals for a manual ...when i removed my automatic brake pedal ,,,i noticed that i had one brake light switch and another switch with a large vacuum hose...is that for the booster?

 

That would be the vacuum cut-out for the cruise control. Heck, that whole thing is the brake switch for the cruise. The manual set SHOULD have a bracket for both. Did you cut the hole in the bulkhead for the clutch cylinder yet? If not, pull the brake booster and do so.

ok, but i have no cruise.....i did remove the booster and installed the manual brake and clutch pedal assembly ,,i didn't remove the steering columm..was tight but i think it's in fine,,,i am right about to cut the hole for the clutch linkage in the bottom firewall,,,thanks...
