MAF mod

So i took the screen off the front of my MAF per the article in the tech section, and the procedure went well, and when i started the car all was normal...it was cold so the rpms started high, and as the started dropping the car started kinda sputtering and sounding like it was going to die. after driving for a few minutes to get into closed loop(thinking that might be the problem) i parked and it had gotten a little better but it idles like it has a mild cam now. i just did this today. does my computer need to figure out the new air/fuel curve? and how long will that take. btw it made a noticeable difference in power and response. my 2.8 auto will spin a tire now in a straight line on dry pavement...it never did that before.
