86 2.8, runs good but code 34 after turning on headlights???

Well the 2.8 Firebird I just bought runs awesome but last night I switched on my headlights to go to the store and the car died, restarted and it was running fine again but now its throwing code 34 (map sensor voltage or MAF sensor). Anyone had a similar problem? I drove the car all day for about 60 miles before this with no light, started it up went, it was idling and flipped on the lights and it quit. I'm not super worried about it right now because the car still runs good (hiccups a little at idle, very very little though, figure that's from sitting for 2 years, it's gotten better the more I drive it). Any opinions would be appreciated

well my car idles a little rough but my master mechanic uncle(owns 3 camaros) said all the v6s do it. when i got my car the codes had never been cleared and i had a 34 on there. the dying could be from the sudden load on the alternator...does your voltage drop alot when you switch them on? if its not that its beyond me..but i see no correlation between the lights and the ses light...based on my limited knowledge

I don't really see a correlation either and I've been working on these things (3rd gens and vehicles in general) for awhile now. I'm thinking it's a freak thing because even after pulling the battery cable the code was still there. Today when I went to start the car it started then died, cranked it back up and it was fine with no SES light now. Turn it off and come back later and it's on again.

Check to see if your relay is bad by swapping it with the fuel pump relay before you do anything else with the MAF. There is also a fuse for the sensor, one of the 2 that is bolted to the frame, probably near your battery.

Other than that, you have to remove the sensor and hold it up so that light reflects off of the film inside (also a good idea to check for any burnt electronics on the board at this time). If the light doesn't reflect off of the film as though the film were a mirror (without distortion), you need a new one.

:edit: Also check your connectors for damage. I know half the wiring on all of my relays is missing pieces of insulation. Why it's missing, and why near the terminals, I don't know, but it is. Luckily nothing's shorting out.
