Speedo not working, need ideas where to start.

I just bought my car and am still trying to get it running properly after it has sat for several years. One of the many little issues this car has is that the speedo does not work. I have not yet began to look into it but am looking for any ideas as to where to start. My car is a 88, V6 with auto trans. I just replaced the fuel tank, pump, sending unit and did a tune-up. I work with the PO but since it has been sitting for 4-5 years he does not or at least doesn't want to remember too many of its problems. The only problem he seems to remember was that there was either a tranny leak or engine oil leak which is why he parked the car with intentions of fixing the leak which he obviously never got around to. Any tips or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Speedo cable?

If everything else works in the dash then maybe the speedo is broke. Could just replace that part.

thats my 2 cents

Welcome to TGO. Posting the year, make and model of your car is important. For example, if you have an 82-89 Camaro, the speedo is cable driven, the 90+ electric. Bird are electric 86+, IIRC. At any rate, if your car's speedo is cable driven, check the following link:

86-89 Birds only have the electric speedo if they don't have the idiot light cluster... That speedo DOES have a cable.

Very interesting. Though I'm not terribly knowledgeable about my Pontiac cousin, I was under the impression that 82-85 Birds were cable driven and that all 86+ Birds were electronic.
