Re: backfire in intake

That won't help you adjust the timing, which requires loosening the dizzy bolt. I don't know if a dizzy wrench would work, seeing as how we have all of that crap in the way of it's rotational arc. If necessary, worst-case, you'll have to break down the intake to the lower manifold and get at the bolt that way. Also, try tightening the bolt a tiny bit before you go and loosen it.

:edit: Sounds like you might want to check out the MAP signal as well.

Sounds like maybe your cat is clogged with the same carbon that's fouling your plugs. As for getting rid of it, check FL's state regulations. I know Alabama doesn't require one, but FL I don't know about. If you have to leave it, gut it.

If and when you go to pull the cat, if it's factory, gut it, automatically. Factory cats were almost as bad as our exhaust manifolds for exhaust flow. If the cat is a replacement, look through either end to see if you can see ANYTHING through it. If not, gut it or toss it (if you can).

BTW, I have family in that neck of the woods.

Re: backfire in intake

It's possible that when you broke the dizzy loose you moved it a little and knocked it out of time. Try turning it a little one way or the other and see if that helps.
