89 bird wont start

Car cranks but wont start, has spark. Jumped the fuel pump and could here it hum, after jumping the pump the car will start for a second then quit. When I turn the ignition on I don't here the pump hum. What should I check next? Any Ideas would be helpful. Mechanically inclined but not a mechanic, Help Please.

How did you "Jump the pump"? When you turn on the key normally you don't hear the pump run? If not, the pump or the pump relay would be my guess. The pump relay is on the firewall near the master cylinder, and they are not very expensive.

Does your oil pressure gauge read at all? If not, then the oil pressure unit by the oil filter needs to be replaced as well, being both a fuel pump switch and the gauge sender. Also, does your car post a code 54? Swap the fuel pump relay (has a big orange wire and a gray wire attached, not a couple of green ones and a black one with red stripe) with the fan relay (the one with the black/red wire) and see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply, the oil pressure switch is bad (its leaking a bit), it was unpluged. I pluged it back in and thats when the car wouldn't start, it ran just before that. I unpluged it again and it wouldn't start. I jumped the pump by putting 12v to the g socket on the ALSDL.

Did you swap the 2 relays I mentioned and try that?

Not yet, I'm on duty tonight, I'll try that on Monday when I'm off. Thanks again for the response.

i dont if it is the same on a 89 2.8 but on my 91 3.1 he fuel pump fuse is on the passenger right behind the fuel cannister you might want to check that if you have one.

There is power to the relay... He's already done the trick of bypassing the ECM.

OP, try swapping the relays. If this doesn't cure the problem, I'm willing to bet you have a code 54 and a bad ECM (pump runs with power and ground connected to the test terminals in the ALDL). Mine did that twice and I needed an ECM both times.
