When is the fan suppost to come on?

I have an 86 camaro 2.8 and for the longest time I never saw the fan come on even after prolonged idling. I took it to the shop and they told me it came on ok and it even had a fail safe at 230*. That was before I had gauges and I just had the idiot light. Since then I put gauges in and I finally got brave enough to let it idle until the fans came on, but according to the gauge it didn't come on until well past the 220 mark. It was more like 230 or 240 before they came on. Are the stock gauges very accurate? It if it is does that sound like its too hot? Is there a way I can adjust when the fan comes on? The car normally runs around 190* when moving, I would rather it just come on around there. Thanks!

Stock fan temp is 235*, either through the ECM or the backup switch in the rear of the pass side cylinder head. You can install a different switch, either through the radiator or replacing the backup switch with a lower temp switch.

Does anyone have a good way of finding a new switch that will fit in the backup hole and have the same connector but turn the fan on around 200? I did searches on autozone but it just keeps bringing up the stock temp.

Look at Summit or one of those places. There are companies out there that make lower temp fan switches, but they aren't commonly available at the round-the-corner parts store.

Check the one for an '87 GN (Buick).

Keep the temps well below 200F and you will discover you have a whole new car.
