Shadow Trouble Codes

Hey everybody, longtime fan of the site. I have a stock 2.8 automatic multiport that has been my daily driver for going on 4 years now.

After dropping my dad off at the airport I noticed that my car was running a little rough and my gas mileage was plummeting. Also at idle the car is vibrating almost surging ahead or choking.

Now the first time I looked for trouble codes I got 34 for MAF, so I took out the MAF, cleaned it, put it back in, MAF code is gone.

Went for a drive, still riding rough and now my voltage meter on the dash is jumping to 18 volts. Pull over the car and retrieve trouble code 53 from the ECM, which is system voltage is to high or digital egr valve solenoid error.

Reconnect all wires to the alternator, started the car up, no codes, but car is still riding rough.

Im inclined to think I need a new EGR Valve, but before I go out buy the part and install it, any other ideas from the minds on the board about possible solutions or troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Re: Shadow Trouble Codes

There's nothing wrong with your EGR (there is no digital EGR system on 85-89 cars). Get your alternator tested before you blow up your battery and the ignition module and ECM with it.
