Oil leak, coming from?

Hello, now I am tackling, how to figure out were this leak is coming from, It drips out of a hole at what I belive is bottom of transmission when the car is running.
its the hole in the begging of the vid with the oil near it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNH7uJ-C9YQ

Any suggestions on things that could be above this that could be leaking oil?

Updated look at leakings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulNWW4e5B1w I see antifreeze drops and maybe some oil drops.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

likely from the crank seal, possibly the pan gasket -if
its leaking pretty bad the crank seal might have popped
out of position...

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

I had the same problem. So what I did was replaced the easiest stuff first, then was gonna try a rear main seal (crank seal). What it ended up being was the o-ring around the distributor shaft.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

messed with distributor cap so wonder if it got worse tugging on distributor, thing below the cap was a pain to pull off.

If I take my distributor cap off, and mark the position, does the distributor itself unbolt and pull up and out? and seel will be in there?
after looking in chilton manual, looks like there will be a retaining clamp and bolt, wires to disconect and then the distrubutor itself will pull up while i turn it counterclockwise. marking the position of rotor when its in there and were it comes out when turning counterclockwise

Thanks for the suggestions, I am thinking this is somthing to advanced for myself, so gonna look for a good garage in the dallas texas area

I also been trying to track down why my car been having rpm jumps on startup, and now shuts down randomly while driving, I am guessing this can do it. I Replaced all the sensors I seen as suggestions,
replaced
fuel pump
IAC
map sensor
spark plugs, ignition coil, dist cap, somthing under the cap
O2 sensor
fuel filter
oil filter
pcv valve
vapor purge thing and solenoid tommorow, ( crossed intake and vapor line so fuel was pouring out my canister.

doesn't look like fluids are mixing with each other.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

yeah i have a 2.8 in my car and the dist is shoved under the firewall so its kinda a bitch to get the bolt out. the bolt is directly under the dist and very hard to get to. but when you get the bolt loose its easy to just pull straight out and the o ring is wraped around the shaft. if you can do it yourself i would it would be much cheeper to buy a set of 50 cent o rings than to pay a shop.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

Cool thanks, changed the O ring, that bolt was def not fun. but finally got to it.
O ring that was on there didn't look worn or anything. New rotor I had put on fell apart, but its still holding on and working for now, till I can grab another rotor in the morning.

I am guessing its time to change my distributor. Heres a vid of mine. Let me know what you think

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

Oils coming out steady now when the engine is running. Side note, have new distibutor being put in tonight,
and looking for a garage near dallas Texas that can find and fix the oil leak.

I had myb rear end to the ground when did fuel pump someone had suggested a driveshaft seal or a rear seal. could it be driveshaft got pulled to far? doubting it.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

That distributor actually looks like it's in pretty good shape; sure it could use a new pickup coil and ignition module, but otherwise looks good.

If the oil leak became steady, you might've used a wrong O-ring or one that was too thin. Should be 1/8th inch thick, 1 inch inside diameter. Pep boys used to sell bags of O-rings in the hardware aisle, when they used to have a hardware aisle. One time I used an o-ring from my "red box of o-rings"- it leaked right away, turns out the o-rings were so cheap that they weren't quite 1/8th inch thick. A new GM o-ring from the local Chevy dealer (I think it was 80 cents?) solved the leak (and proved that my $10 box-of-o-rings was worthless)!

Oh and did you make sure the distributor was seated all the way? A new/thicker o-ring needs some persuasion to go that extra half inch into the intake manifold.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

If the rear seal is wet it might be dripping down from above, check the top of engine for oil (under the dist cap), let us know what you find

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

Replaced Dizzy other day

So got the last bolt to free up for torque convertor cover, couldn't really see oil dripping or were coming from, under dizzy is dry. Did see few drips of antifreeze. When I first seen the leak seen couple drops of antifreeze, beside the drainage hole and one guy at parts store suggested water pump.
I let her run and got under there couldnt see anything but little drops of antifreeze. Let her run longer and no mess on the ground at this momment.

I can pray the oil part of it was fixed with distributor, pretty sure I seen oil after dizzy replaced, but coulda been the antifreeze pushing the oil through with it that was built up on the torque convertor cover. *crosses fingers.

update vid of leak issue, definityl some antifreeze and some looks like still some oil, guys at the parts store say blown head gasket and that engine is garbage do to the antifreeze. i'll be p'd if can't be fixed. finally got her running good again. Something with my charcoal canister and that system is messed up, have new purge valve, new solenoid. When the solenoid is told to open and the vaccum goes through the cars RPMs jump like crazy, for the momment vaccum lines unplugged from solenoid and solenoid unplugged form electical and runs great.

Re: Oil leak, coming from?

I recently went through a similar thing. My '85 sport coupe leaked to the point of me having to carry a bottle of tranny fluid with me. This pesky leak foiled my every attempt to fix it, but last June I gave up looking and took it into an auto repair shop. So far all leaks have stopped and the car speeds along and sounds great too. But the leaking of engine oil, was a complete surprise, so while it was having the tranny leak fixed, the engine oil issue was repaired too. Sorry I did not do these on my own, but after years of trying on my own, I gave in to the pros. Good luck with yours.
