no power after about 3.5k rpm on 3.1L
no power after about 3.5k rpm on 3.1L
it is a 92 3.1 5 speed. i picked this car up very cheap recently. It would not start and looks like someone checked and tested everything (slit wire insulation for multimeter) then i guess they gave up and i got it cheap. The problem was that all the fuel injectors were shot. So here is where i am at now.
I installed all 15lb ford injectors (spray tested and all working properly), a new ignition coil, cap, rotor, and new spark plugs. and tested fuel pressure(only while not running) tested good and held ok. Check engine light does not come on.
what it does now is== starts up easy then has a bouncing idle that sometime needs throttle to keep from dying. But once warmed up it idles like it should. When not in gear/clutch in, it revs high like it should. Low end power feels good. Spinning the tire it revs high like it should. But when i hit 3rd gear or higher it seems to flatten out at about 3k rpm. With no popping, jerking, or back firing, it just acts like that's it. But it feels like alright power below that rpm. Seems to top around that rpm while under load, but rev normal with no load.
I'm pretty sure my choice of injectors isn't the problem (unless 15lb injectors won't work). So fuel pressure problem??(i never checked it while it was running) Does this sound like something a bad ICM or ECM would do??(no check engine light even when running bad and bad injectors) Or the guy before me could have turned the distributor and not got it to start, leaving it to far retarded?? (distributor is bolted down tight so maybe not)
I am going to wait till wendsday for better weather to work in. If you guys can help point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
maybe a stuck EGR or clogged converter??

The 3.1 doesn't make much over 3500 rpm anyways, are you sure there is a problem? I'd find some stock injectors and retest. Could be an IAC issue for the funky idle when cold. It wouldn't be an EGR issue if you're testing WOT, EGR is closed under pressure. I guess maybe if its stuck open....
Oh, and don't cut wires to test, thats just asking for more trouble. Insert a really thin pin or something the like into the back of the connector. Its called backprobing.

figured it out. sprayed starter fluid everywhere while it was running and i had intake/vacuum leaks in 4 different places. regooped it and runs a lot better.

Re: no power after about 3.5k rpm on 3.1L
I've seen this a few times. I'm a little puzzled because mine ('91) easily goes to 5500 and I've blipped it to 6k a couple of times and it felt like it had more but I didn't want to push it too far. I put in reman injectors a few months ago and I'm not aware of any mods to the engine so am I lucky or are others unlucky if they're running out of juice after 3500 rmp????
