Backfire after rebuild

I put a rebuild 2.8L in an 86 camero. It has a slight backfire . It also lopes at idle when cold but better after it warms. It is a stock engine,Any ideas?

How's the timing? Is it at 10 degrees advanced (BTDC) with the EST connector unhooked?

Have you checked the timing?
