well, you can gain as much horsepower as money you have to put in the Engine. Things to looks at would be a new camshaft, which is supposed to be a nice gain, also looks at exaust (dynomax, flowmaster, etc.) a K&N open element will feed more air to the engine which is nice. Some headers from a 3.4 which are fabricated to fit the 2.8L would also be a nice addition. (3.1firebird did the header thing before, you can ask him for more info)a freebe is removing the TB coolant lines, but i wouldn't do it now because it's starting to get cold, and you'll need them soon. Basically, you can do anything to a v6 that you can for a v8. Graeme even had a supercharged 2.8L that he had done by Vortec.

that'll depend on how much you like the car. right now, 3.1firebird is running low 16's to high 15's. There are others that want to hit the 14's which is possible. And with the s/c option, the car will easily take out v8's. But, you have to be deticated to do this work, so, if you just want speed, for the same price you could probably go and buy a v8 car. It'll still be cheaper than dropping a v8 in your v6.
If you are really interested in speed, no it's not worth it. Keep in mind that unless you throw handfuls of money at it, your V6 will have a hard time keeping up, or beating V8 cars (especially modded ones). But, I did the V6 thing for a while, and found it to be a good beginning point, when I first got into cars.
