olympic sized pool in the trunk

thats right puddles, puddles in my trunk. I dont exactly know when this started happening but when i reached for my gear on a recent paintball outing i put my hand in a big puddle of water in my trunk, hopefully its only the stripping around the trunk lid but also when i bought my car about 11 months ago i noticed the factory spoiler wasnt on it, i think it was the lip spoiler from an '89 camaro, could this have caused a problem with it not fitting right or something?

MAjInRS, welcome to the V6 board!

It might not be the hatch weatherstripping. Between the hatch window glass and the "rear fill panel" (that's where the spoiler usually sits), there's a black rubber weatherstrip piece. It's common for that thing to deteriorate and shrink because of age & heat. If it does, all the water that sits on top of your hatch window will slide underneath, and drip into the trunk. (It happened to me, fried one of my stereo amps.)

I buy Permatex's "Black Silicone" for weatherstripping. I use a new razor to slightly cut "in" to the original stuff, to remove it- as in:

===== ( _______

Where === is the fill panel, ___ is the glass, and ( is the groove I make in the weatherstrip. Then I use the Black silicone to lay a fat beat in that area, sealing the fill panel to the window. After it dries, I take a new sharp blade and slice the bead of black silicone so it's at a slight s-l-a-n-t to the window, as follows:

===== \ _______

No leaks! You could probably "see" if that weatherstrip is deteriorated. To find it myself, before I knew about it, I taped a garden hose to the window, turned on the water, then climbed into the car and looked for the drip.

[edit] Fixed diagrams...
[edit2] Why is s-l-a-n-t a word to censor?

yes, TomP is correct about the weatherstripping between the glass and the spoiler piece. when i replaced my hatch glass the dumbf**k that installed it forgot the stripping so.....the next rainy day????? yup, my hatch was COMPLETELY FULL of water.

could also be the rubber-gaskets between the spoiler and the hatch.
